CA:RMM:jld354/hpc City council Meeting 2-27-90 Santa Monica, California RESOLUTION NUMBER 7983(CCS) (city council Series) A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA RECOGNIZING THE EFFORTS OF THE CALIFORNIA SENIOR LEGISLATURE, THE CALIFORNIA STATE LEGISLATURE, AND THE CALIFORNIA COMMISSION ON AGING ON BEHALF OF 4.3 MILLION OLDER ADULTS IN CALIFORNIA WHEREAS, the state of California offers a unique opportunity for its 4.3 million older citizens to become directly involved in important senior issues through the california Senior Legislature; and WHEREAS, the California Senior Legislature, composed of 120 senior volunteers elected by seniors from every part of California, meets annually in the state Capitol to determine the needs and concerns of their fellow seniors and to urge effective action on a statewide level and then prioritize the concerns into a package of bills that can be realistically dealt with by the state Legislature; and WHEREAS, the necessary funding for the california Senior Legislature is provided through the California Fund for Senior citizens, a voluntary donated fund supported by taxpayers through a "check-off" on their individual state income tax forms (Line 44 on Form 540, the long form; and Line 44 of tax Form 540A, the short form); and - 1 - . . WHEREAS, the first $75,000.00 contributed is used for costs associated with the annual session of the California Senior Legislature and the next $250,000.00 shall be used for the ongoing legiSlative advocacy and educational activities of the California Senior Legislature; and WHEREAS, any funds above the $325,000.00 shall be allocated to the California Commission on Aging for direct senior citizen programs through contracts with public and nonprofit organizations with the california Department of Aging for limited term pilot projects on an annual basis; and WHEREAS, this low cost check-off system, as devised by the State, is a highly innovative approach to respond to the need for more advocacy and visibility for the State's 4.3 million older adults, NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1. The city Council of the City of Santa Monica supports the concept and the aims of the california Fund for senior Citizens, which allows individualS to contribute and thus better the lives of our older citizens. SECTION 2. The City Council of the City of Santa Monica recognizes the members of the California State Legislature and the COm1llisslon on Aging for the fine services they provide the State's seniors. SECTION 3. The City council of the city of Santa Monica commends the California senior Legislature on the celebration of their lOth Anniversary of service to the elderly, by the elderly. - 2 - . .
