A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL
OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA DECLARING
SUNDAY, APRIL 24, 1983 TO BE
WALKAMERICA DAY IN SANTA MONICA
WHEREAS, 45 Years ago the Na~ional Foundation for
Infantile Paralysis was founded ~ fight polio. with funds
contributed to the March of Dimes~ and
WHEREAS, wi~hin twen~y (20) years the Salk vaccine and
la~er the Sabin vaccine, both the products of research totally
funded by the March of Dimes made the foundation the only
voluntary healLh organization to eliminate the disease it had
targeted~ and
WHEREAS, with the conquest of Polio in 1958. the
uniquely successful network of dedicated volunteers, medical
professionals, and scientists turned its attention to Birth
defects, the nations largest health problem; and
WHEREAS, birth defects strike one (1) out of every
twelve (12) infants born, and another 1/2 million miscarriages
and stillbirths occur every year, largely because of fatal fetal
developments~ and
WHEREAS, birth defects not only take their to 11 at
birth, 1.2 million infants, children and adul~s are hospi~alized
yearly for treatment of birch defects: and

WHEREAS, more than 60,000 Americans of all ages die
yearly as the result of birth defects; and
WHEREAS, the core strength of the March of Dimes is the
volunteer; and
WHEREAS, the volun~eer is committed to acquiring and
acting upon a remarkable range of knowledge and concerns about
the needs of the community; and
Whereas,
the se
volunteers consist of, civic and
religious leaders, educators, students, homemakers and men and
women from industry and labor,
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA
MONICA DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION
1.
April
24, 1983 is declared to be
WalkAmerica Day in Santa Monica.
SECTION 2. The City Clerk shall shall certify to the
adop~ion of this Resolution, and thenceforth and thereafter the
same shall be in full force and effect.
