A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF SANTA MONICA IN SUPPORT OF
LEGAL SERVICES CORPORATION
~iHEREAS, in 1974, the Congress adopted the Legal
Services Corporation Act to fund and a~nister local-legal
serv1ces programs providing legal asslstance to the poor, and
WHEREAS, 1n adopting the Legal Services corporation
Act, the Congress found that there is a need to provide equal
access to the system of just~ce ~n our Nation for individuals
who seek redress of grlevances, a need to provide h1gh quality
legal assistance to those who would otherwlse be unable to
afford adequate legal counsel, and that for many citizens the
availability of legal services has reaffirmed faith in our
government of laws, and
v~IEREAS, President Reagan has proposed elimination of
the Legal Services Corporation and funding for local legal
seyvices programs, and
WHEREAS, the elimination of the Legal Services Corpor-
atlon will res~lt in many poor persons, 1nclud1ng those residing
in the City of Santa Monica, be1ng denied equal access to the

system of Justice,
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA
MONICA DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:

SECTION 1. Legal representation of the poor is
fundamental to our system of law and )Ustlce and is ensuring that
basic survlval needs of the poor are not unlawfully terminated
in such areas as housing, governmental benefits and health care.
SECTION 2. It is of crucial importance that the
Legal SerVlces Corporation continue to eXlst wlth adequate funding
so that the poor will have mlnlmal access to this Nation's system
of justlce.
SECTION 3. The City Council supports leglslation for
the reauthorlzatlon of the Legal Servlces Corporatlon at its
presently eXlsting budget and opposes legislation ellffilnatlng
the Legal SerVlces Corporatlon or reducing its current fundlng.
SECTION 4. That the Mayor is directed to send a copy
of thlS resolution to the presldent and all members of the
California Congresslonal delegatlon.
SECTION 5. The Clty Clerk shall certlfy to the adoption
of this resolution, and thenceforth and thereafter the same shall
be ln full force and effect.
