A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA URGING AN END
TO THE PROLIFERATION OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS
WHEREAS, the international political climate in-
creasingly recognizes nuclear war as a rational possibility;
and
WHEREAS, present medical and scientific evidence shows
that nuclear war, even a limited one, would result in death,
injury, and disease on a scale unprecedented in human his-
tory; and
WHEREAS, medical disaster planning for a nuclear war is
mean~ngless, since most hospitals would be destroyed, most
medical personnel dead or inJured, most supplies unavailable,
and those who surv~ve would eventually die; and
WHEREAS, the economic, ecological, and social fabric on
which human l~fe depends would be destroyed in the United
States, the Soviet Union, and most of the rest of the world;
and
WHEREAS, worldwide fallout would contaminate much of
the globe for generations, severely damaging all living

things; and
WHEREAS, the present costs of preparing for nuclear war
are so draining on national resources that programs upon
which the poor and needy depend are being severely cutback,
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA
MONICA DOES RESOLVE:
SECTION 1. That the President and Congress of the
Unlted States act immediately and with a sense of urgency to
reduce tensions between the United States and the Soviet
Union.
SECTION 2. That all nations join in a temporary
suspension of nuclear weapons production and that a perm-
anent, international nuclear weapons ban be sought.
SECTION 3. That the City Clerk shall certify to the
adoption of this resolution and thenceforth and thereafter
the same shall be in full force and effect.
