RESOLUTION NO. 6479 (CITY COUNCIL SERIES) A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA PROCLAIMING MAY 9, 1982 THROUGH MAY 15, 1982 AS COMMUNITY COLLEGE WEEK WHEREAS, California's 107 community colleges are dedicated to the needs of local cltizens; and WHEREAS, the City of Santa Monica is particularly proud of its own excellent community college which offers classes and programs to all age and interest groups, includes an emeritus college, and serves approximately 22,000 students each year; and WHEREAS, California's community colleges stress local control, an "open doorll policy of equal access to all persons, tuition-fr-ee education~ opportunitles for lifelong learning through a wide spectrum of programs and courses; and WHEREAS~ Californla1s community colleges have taken a leadership role in developing programs and services for students with special needs, such as the disadvantaged. reentering women~ the handlcapped, student parents, members of ethnic minorities, senior- citizens, working students, and those needing developmental education; and WHEREAS~ Callfornia's community colleges believe in the importance of the unique classroom experience between student and teaching~ the preserva- tion of academic fr-eedom, and the fostering of staff excellence; and WHEREAS, California's community colleges continue to have a highly beneficial impact on the state's economy by producing graduates wlth salable Skllls who become productive cltizens; and '"" e . - 2 - WHEREAS, California's community colleges are dedlcated to the principle that our society will benefit when all persons have an opportunity for llfetime learning and an improved quality of life. NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1. That the City Council of the City of Santa Monica does hereby declare the week of May 9-15,1982, as Community College Week wlth the theme of lICalifornia's Community Colleges...By the People...For the People. II SECTION 2. That the City Council of the City of Santa Monica urges the citizens, students~ and legislators in our community to strongly support and take advantage of the outstanding local programs and services offered by tne Santa Monica Community College District.
