A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF SM1TA MONICA DECLARING
THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 9, 1982, AS
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS WEEK
WHEREAS, vlolent acts lnfllcted upon spouses or chlldren
cause traglc damage to famll1es and their members; and
WHEREAS, the rate of domestlc vlo1ence is increaslng,
causing severe damage to the public health and welfare through-
out the country and in Southern California; and
WHEREAS, domestic violence can only be abated if the
public lS aware of the causes and manifestations of famlly-dir-
ected violence and lf resources are available to permlt enforce-
ment of the law and treatment of families subJect to vlo1ence;
and
WHEREAS, beginning Saturday, October 9, 1982 and extendlng
through Saturday, October 16, 1982, concerned women and men in
Southern Callfornia wl1l comrnem0rate Domestic Vlo1ence Awareness
Week; and
WHEREAS, the theme of Domestic Violence Awareness Week
is "Domestlc Violence Hlts Close to Home"; and
WHEREAS, the purpose of Domestic Violence Awareness Week
is to focus community-wide attentlon on battered women and thelr

families as well as the programs that serve them; and
WHEREAS, SOJourn Servlces For Battered Women, organized
ln 1977 by the Ocean Park Community Center, is a Santa Monlca
City based, county-w1de agency serving the needs of battered
women and thelr chlldren-- offer1ng shelter, 24-hour crisis
lnterventlon, a Saturday support group, counsellng, and con-
stantly strlvlng to end the cycle of domestic violence that
strikes our community at every level,
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA
MONICA DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. The week of October 9, 1982, 1S declared
to be Domestic Violence Awareness Week 1n the City of Santa
Monlca. All clt1zens are urged to be aware of the problem
that domestlc vlolence poses ln our society and support SOJourn
SerV1ces for Battered Women in all ltS lmportant services.
SECTION 2. The C1ty Clerk shall certify the adoptlon of
thlS Resolutlon, and thenceforth and thereafter the same shall
be in full force and effect.
