A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL
OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA
IN OPPOSITION TO THE PERIPHERAL CANAL
WHEREAS, on February 3, 1981, the City Council of the
City of Santa Monica adopted Resolution Number 6193 (CCS);
and
WHEREAS, Resolution Number 6193 (CCS) rescinded a
previous resolution of the City Council of the City of Santa
Monlca in support of the Peripheral Canal: and
WHEREAS, Senate Bill 200 enacted into law by the
California Leglslature in 1980 provides for the construction
of the Peripheral Canal; and
WHEREAS, Senate B1Il 200 provides for an expensive and
inequitable method of developing water supplies, favoring big
agrlcultural users and large urban development interests over
urban consumers: and
WHEREAS, there are various alternatives to the peri-
pheral Canal including urban and agricultural conservation,
increased storage capacity, more equitable pricing by elimi-
nating subsidies, and groundwater management programs; and

WHEREAS, sufficient signatures have been obtained for a
referendum on Senate Bill 200,
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA
MONICA DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION l. That 1S opposes the Peripheral Canal and
urges a "NO VOTE" on the Senate Bill 200 Referendum.
SECTION 2. The City Clerk shall certify the adoption
of this resolution and thenceforth and thereafter the same
shall be in full force and effect.
