A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA
MONICA IN SUPPORT OF LEGISLATION PRESERVING THE CALIFORNIA
COASTLINE
WHEREAS, the people of California, through the Coastal Initiative
of 1972 and the Coastal Act of 1976, have determined the California Coastline
is a unique and valuable resource that ought to be preserved for present and
future generations. That same legislation similarly found that the 1100
miles of Cal1fornia Coastline is a region that ought to be available
to people of all incomes; and
WHEREAS, the citizens of Santa Monica have supported legislation
to keep the Coast open. A majority of Santa Monicans voted for the Coastal
Initiative in 1972 and our legislators have been consistently supportive
of legislation to keep the beach safe from env1ronmental harm and over-
development.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA
DOES HEREBY RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. Cons1stent and coherent planning 1S necessary for
the preservation of the Coastline in order to take account of the regional
and statewide impact of development along the coastline.
Section 2. People outside of the coastal zone are entitled to
have access to the beach and that local governments within coastal juris-
dictions need to work cooperatively to maintain access. The Coastal Commis-
sion, operating under legislat1ve mandates, provides equ1table and workable
mechanisms 1n guaranteeing regional coordination 1n solving access problems.

Section 3.
Housing opportunities for people of all incomes
within the Coastal Zone are dimlnishing rapidly. The Clty Council of the
City of Santa Monlca finds that affordable housing in the Coastal Zone
ought to be of hlgh priority and merits strong legislative directives
so that local governments can work cooperatively in the goal of providing
affordable housing opportunities in the Coastal Zone.
Section 4. The City Clerk shall attest to the adoption of this
resolution and thereafter the same shall be in full force and effect.
