A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
SANTA MONICA OPPOSING ADDITIONAL REDUCTION OF FUNDS
IN FISCAL YEAR 1982 FEDERAL PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
BUDGET
WHEREAS, lt appears the federal government intends to drastically
reduce its FIscal Year 1982 commitment to mass transit through further
budget reductlons; and
WHEREAS, any further budget cuts would result ln dramatic fare
1ncreases and sharp service reductions; and
WHEREAS~ the Southern Ca11fornia Rapid Transit District fare
structure is one of the highest in the nation; and
WHEREAS~ the Southern California RapId Transit District has no
addit10nal subsidy funds available; and
WHEREAS, publlC transportat1on use reduces the total community cost
for transportation; and
WHEREAS, the per capita tax support for the Southern California Rapid
Transit District is a small fractlon of the tax support provTded publ1C
transportation in most other maJor urban areas; and
WHEREAS, many benefits of public transportat1on are enjoyed by all
persons 1n the community including those who do not directly use public
transportation.
NOW~ THEREFORE. THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA DOES
HEREBY RESOLVE:
SECTION 1. The City Council expresses its deep concern regarding the
proposed reductlons in the federal government Fiscal Year 1982 budget because
of 1tS devastating impact on local transportation services.

SECTION 2. The C1ty Council supports the position of the Board of
Directors of the Southern California Rapid Transit District in opposing
federal budget cuts for Fiscal Year 1982 and authorlzes distribution of
th1S position to publ1C officials and affected interest groups.
SECTION 3. The City Clerk shall cert1fy to the adoption of this
resolution, and thenceforth and thereafter the same shall be 1n full force
and effect.
