RESOLUT ION NO. 5406
(CITY COUNCIL SERIES)
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
SANTA MONICA DECLARING ITS INTENTION TO PLANT TREES
ALONG SANTA MONICA BOULEVARD BETWEEN 17TH STREET AND
20TH STREET WITHIN THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Santa Monica is
empowered by Section 5870, et seq., of the Streets and Highways Code of
the State of California to plant trees at various locations within the
City of Santa Monica;
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA
DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. That the public interest requires and it is the
intention of the City Council of the City of Santa Monica to order the
following work to be done, to wit: The planting of trees along Santa Monica
Boulevard from 17th Street to 20th Street all in the City of Santa Monica.
The estimated assessment cost of the improvement is $1.75 per front foot to
the abutting property owners and the balance of the cost is to be borne by
the Ci ty.
SECTION 2. That said proposed work or improvement, in the opinion
of the City Council of the City of Santa Monica, is of more than local or
ordinary public benefit, and said Council hereby proposes that the district
in the City of Santa Monica to be benefitted by said work or improvement and
to be assessed to pay the cost and expense thereof includes all of the property
abutting Santa ~bnica Boulevard between 17th Street and 20th Street.
SECTION 3. Notice hereby is given pursuant to said Section 5870
et seq. that on November 13, 1979, at the hour of 7;30 p.m. in the Council
Chambers of the City Hall of said City of Santa Monica, situated at 1685 Main
Street in said City, any and all persons having any objections to the proposed

work or improvement may appear before the City Council and show cause why
toe said proposed work or improvement snould not be carried out in accordance
with said Resolution of Intention.
SECTION 4. The Superintendent of Streets immediately shall
cause to be conspicuously posted along the line of said contemplated improve-
ment notice of t~e passage of this Resolution of Intention in the manner and
form prescribed by law.
The City Clerk hereby is directed to mail notices, in the manner
and form prescribed by law~ of the adoption of this resolution to all persons
owning real property in the hereinbefore described assessment district, whose
names and addresses appear on the last equalized assessment roll for city
taxes or as known to the City Clerk.
SECTION 5. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this
res~lution and thenceforth and thereafter the same shall be in full force
and effect.

WHEREAS, a formal Bid No. 1477 was sent to thirty
prospective bidders. Four bids were received and opened August 28,
1979 The low bid submitted by two different bidders was $180.00
per tree, for a total cost of $90,000.00, and
~mEREAS, the 1979 -1980 Park Division budget contains
$42,500.00 (based on an estimated cost of $85.00 per tree, using
contract prices paid by other cities) for the trimming and slicking
of approximately 500 Phoenix Palms as the first phase of a 3-year
urogram to trim and slick all Phoenix Palms Citvwide: and

SECTION 3. That formal bid procedure is waived and the
City Manager is authorized to execute a contract with Callahan Tree
Trimming, Inc. in the amount of $50,000 for trimming and slicking
500 Phoenix Palm Trees.
SECTION 4. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption
of this resolution, and thenceforth and thereafter the same shall
be in full force and effect.
