RESOLUTION NO. 6083(CCS)
RESOLUTION REGARDING EQUAL RIGHTS A~ENDMENT A~D
SELECTION OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA AS SITE FOR 1980
CONGRESS OF CITIES
WHEREAS, the Equal RIghts Amendment as a matter of simple Justice will
extend the American ideal of equalIty for all and give a clear consti-
tutional basis for overturning many state laws that fall to gIve equal
treatment to men and women; and
WHEREAS, the Equal Rights Amendment has received bi-partIsan support,
wIth recent polls showing that 56% of the AmerIcan people favor it; and
WHEREAS, the State of Georgia IS one of the fifteen states whIch have
not yet ratIfied the Equal RIghts Amendment, with past efforts for
approval beIng defeated in both legislatIve committees and the Georgia
Senate; and
WHEREAS, the National League of Cities has selected Atlanta, GeorgIa
as the site of its 1980 Congress of CitIes,
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Santa MonIca will not
participate In this conference held in a state which has not ratIfIed
the ERA, and therefor Will not send eIther elected officials or staff
at City expense.
