A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF SANTA MONICA REQUESTING CALTRANS
TO INSTALL A TRAFFIC SIGNAL AT CHAUTAUQUA
BOULEVARD FOR SOUTHBOUND TRAFrIC ON PACIFIC
COAST HIGHHAY
~HEREAS, the lack of any stop slgnal on the Pacific
Coast Hlghway between Temascal Canyon and the Californla Incllne
has resulted in excessive speeds and a hlgh lncidence of accldents
along thlS heavlly traveled two-m~le stretch; and
WHEREAS, thlS cond~t~on has serlously impeded beach
access 1n the affected area and created a dangerous sltuation for
those attemptlng to turn into beach parklng lots from northbound
traffic lanes; and
WHEREAS, it does not appear that thlS condition will be
ameliorated by proposals currently belng considered by Caltrans
\'Ii th respect to this portion of the Paciflc Coast Highway; and
WHEREAS, the Paclfic Pallsades Beach Property Owners
ASsoclation has for several years been working with Caltrans with
respect to thlS problem and has 9roposed, as a solutlon, the
lnstallation of a traffic signal in the southbound lane at the
lntersectlon of Chautauqua Boulevard and the Paclflc Coast
Highway; and

~mEREAS, the City Counc~l believes that the ~nstallation
of such a s~gnal would advance the publ~c health, safety and welfare
and would further the pol~c~es expressed ~n the Santa Mon~ca Local
Coastal Plan, part~cularly with regard to the prior~ty of assur~ng
beach access,
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA HEREBY
RESOLVES:
SECTION 1. That Caltrans be requested to ~nstall a
traffic s~gnal at Chautauqua Boulevard for southbound traffic on
Pac~fic Coast Highway.
SECTION 2. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption
of th~s resolut1on, and thenceforth and thereafter the same shall
he ~n full force and effect.
