CA:RMM:JWH:vc:jresfair Clty Councll Meeting 3-26-85 Santa Monica, Callfornia RESOLUTION NUMBER 6991(CCS) (City Council Series) A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY SANTA MONICA DECLARING THE MONTH OF APRIL AS "FAIR HOUSING MONTHM FOR THE YEAR 1985 WHEREAS, Sixteen years ago this month the Congress of the United States passed the Civil Rights Act of 1968, of which Title VIII declared that the law of the land would now guarantee the rights of equal housing opportunity; and WHEREAS, recent tradition has established the month of April as FAIR HOUSING MONTH throughout the United States; and WHEREAS, the City of Santa Monica, on October 9, 1979, voted to supplement existing State law by enacting an ordinance banning housing discrimination based on age, parenthood, pregnancy or potential of actual tenancy of minor children; and WHEREAS, equal housing opportunity is a vital factor leading to the quality of life that we desire and expect for our citizens, and as such must be supported, protected and administered by local government; and WHEREAS, the City of Santa Monica supports the concept and actuality of FAIR HOUSING for all of the residents of this city and this country; and 1 -~- ---- - e e WHEREAS, the City of Santa Mon1ca, through the C1ty Attorney's Office and with the assistance of funds provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, adm1nisters a Fair Hous1ng Program Wh1Ch provides education, counseling and enforcement with respect to Fair Housing Lawsj and WHEREAS, the City of Santa Monica, in conjunction with the Westside Community Housing Resources Board, 1S this year co-sponsoring the annual Fair Housing Poster Contest which involves school children from the local commun1ty; and WHEREAS, a selection of entries in the Fair Housing Poster Contest w1ll be displayed in the City Hall lobby from April 1 through April 12, 1985, featuring this year's theme of "Open Minds + Open Doors. Fa1r Housing-; and WHEREAS, a reception to honor the local winner of the poster contest and to celebrate Fair Housing Month will be held in the City Hall lobby on April 10, 1985 from 4-6 p.m., NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1. The Month of April is proclaimed to be Fair Housing Month 1n the City of Santa Monica for the year 1985 and encourages the cit1zens of our city to support all efforts to strengthen equal housing opportun1ties in the coming year. 2 ---- - . .
