A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF SANTA MONICA ESTABLISHING
EARTHQUAKE PREPAREDNESS WEEK
WHEREAS, Cal~fornla ~s enter~ng a perIod of Increased
se~smIC actIVIty, w~th more earthquakes occurr1ng 1n the past
two years above R~chter magn~tude 6 than 1n the previous two
decades; and
WHEREAS, our C~ty 1S s~tuated on the Santa Mon~ca
earthquake fault and has exper~enced moderate to severe
shak~ng ~n the past; and
WHEREAS, th1S area 1S lIkely to cont~nue to exper1ence
earthquakes of damag1ng 1ntensIt1es In the future; and
WHEREAS, emergency preparedness measures taken by th~s
commun~ty before, dur~ng, and after a damaglng earthquake can
reduce loss of l~fe and property, ease fears, and lessen
confus~on; and
WHEREAS, ~n such a dlsaster, 1nd~vIduals w~ll be
requ1red to take respons~b~l~ty for the~r own safety and care
for the f1rst 72 hours; and
WHEREAS, preparedness 1S the key to earthquake survIval,
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA
MONICA DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:

SECTION 1. The CIty Councll of the CIty of Santa Mon1ca
procla1ms AprIl 15 to 20, 1985, as Earthquake Preparedness
Week and ded1cates the C1ty'S efforts toward organ1z1ng and
1mplementlng the emergency preparedness plan to 1mprove quake
safety.
SECTION 2. The C1ty of Santa Mon1ca wIll begin th1S
campa1gn by tra1n1ng C1ty employees 1n earthquake
preparedness.
SECTION 3. The C1ty of Santa Mon1ca w1lI prov1de 1tS
res1dents, 1nclud1ng school Ch1ldren, the dIsabled,
neIghborhood watch and other communIty groups WIth approprIate
earthquake safety informat1on, not only dur1ng th1S spec1al
week, but throughout the year.
SECTION 4. The C1ty Clerk shall cert1fy to the adoptlon
of th1S Resolut1on, and thenceforth and thereafter the same
shall be 1n full force and effect.
