A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
OF SANTA MONICA PLEDGING SANTA MONICA'S SUPPORT FOR
THE U.S. CONFERENCE OF MAYORS!CALPIRG BUY RECYCLED CAMPAIGN
WHEREAS, the purchase of products made from recycled materials
will increase the demand for raw recyclables collected in the
City's curbside program and thereby promote the city's overall
recycling effort; and
WHEREAS, purchasing recycled products creates market stimulus
which benefits recycled products manufacturers and distributors
located in Santa Monica and other local areasi and
WHEREAS, the use of recycled products diverts material from
the solid waste stream, conserves energy and natural resources, and
reduces pollution, thus benefiting the environment; and
WHEREAS, recycled products are readily available in the
marketplace, meet City of Santa Monica standards, and are
competitively priced,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the city Council of the
City of Santa Monica pledges to support the U.S. Conference of
Mayors/CALPIRG Buy Recycled Campaign; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that by supporting the Buy Recycled
Campaign, the City of Santa Monica pledges to:
1. Purchase recycled printing and writing paper
containing at least 20 percent post-consumer recycled

material.
2. Purchase recycled printing and writing paper
containing at least 30 percent post-consumer recycled
material beginning in 1998.
3. Purchase rerefined motor oil and retread tires for
City fleet vehicles where operationally feasible.
SECTION 1.
The city Clerk shall certify to the adoption of
this Resolution, and thenceforth and thereafter the same shall be
in full force and effect.
