RESOLUTION 7825 (CCS)
RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA
IN SUPPORT OF THE CALIFORNIA DESERT PROTECTION ACT
AND URGING SUPPORT OF THE CALIFORNIA CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION
WHEREAS, Senator Alan Cranston and Congressman Mel Levine
have introduced S 11 and H.R. 780 entitled the "California Desert
Protection Act" into the united States Senate and House of
Representatives; and
WHEREAS, the passage of this legislation would result in
the inclusion of various federally owned desert lands of southern
California into the National Park System and the National
Wilderness preservation System; and
WHEREAS, the purpose of this Bill is to preserve the
unrivaled scenic, geologic and wildlife values associated with
the unique natural landscapes of the California desert and to
perpetuate in their natural state the significant and diverse
ecosystems of the California desert associated with ancient
Indian cultures~ and
WHEREAS, the act would, in addition, provide opportunities
for compatible outdoor public recreation and would promote public
understanding and appreciation of the California desert, while
preserving it for future generations: and
WHEREAS, this spectacular region holds archeological,
geological, and paleontological sights found nowhere else in the
world as well as completed unique plant and animal life: and

WHEREAS, residents of santa Monica, as citizens of the
state of California and as visitors to the California desert, as
well as being the beneficiaries of tourism in our great State,
have a deep interest in protecting all of the natural resources
of our land: and
WHEREAS, the City of Santa Monica has supported and
supports the appropriate preservation and protection of natural
resource lands throughout the state of California;
NOW I THEREFORE I THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA
MONICA DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1.
Endorses and urges the passage of the
California Desert Protection Act.
SECTION 2. Urges the California Congressional Delegation
to support the Act.
SECTION 3. The city Clerk shall certify to the adoption of
this Resolution, and thenceforth and thereafter the same shall be
in full force and effect.
