RESOLUTION NUMBER 9022 (CCS)

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF SANTA MONICA URGING RESIDENTS, BUSINESSES
AND OTHER JURISDICTIONS TO ADOPT
ECOLOGICALLY SUSTAINABLE PAPER USE PRACTICES
WHEREAS, the city of Santa Monica has adopted a Sustainable
city Policy to ensure that the City follows best environmental
practices and actively encourages residents, businesses I and other
jurisdictions to do so; and
WHEREAS, the City has developed procurement procedures
requiring the use of recycled and alternative fiber products to
reduce or avoid altogether reliance on tree-based products; and
WHEREAS, the city has worked with GTE, its local telephone
company, to develop responsible recycling programs for telephone
books; and
WHEREAS,
the city protects mature trees for their
environmental, ecological, and aesthetic benefits; and
WHEREAS I the City recognizes that complex interrelationships
link the preservation of Santa Monica's enviable natural setting to
environmental practices worldwide,
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA
DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:

SECTION 1. The City Council of the city of Santa Monica is
opposed to clear-cutting for the use of wood and fiber products
derived from coastal temperate rainforests.
SECTION 2. The city council calls on GTE, Pacific Bell and
other buyers of wood and fiber products to adopt best environmental
practices, reduce overall wood product consumptionl invest in fiber
from ecologically responsible non-tree sources, and use only
certified sources from second-growth forests.
SECTION 3. The city council calls on the California Public
utilities Commission to develop methods to minimize the unnecessary
production and distribution of telephone books.
SECTION 4. The city Clerk shall certify to the adoption of
this Resolution, and thenceforth and thereafter the same shall be
in full force and effect.
