RESOLUTION NUMBER 9061 (CCS)

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL
OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA DECLARING
ITS OPPOSITION TO THE CALIFORNIA CIVIL RIGHTS
INITIATIVE
WHEREAS, it has been the policy of the City of Santa Monica to
work for the elimination of inequality in all areas of life
including, but not limited to, employment, education, healthcare,
politics, contracting, and law enforcement; and
WHEREAS, Proposition 209, the California civil Rights
Initiative (UInitiativelf), will be placed before the voters in the
November, 1996 election; and
WHEREAS, if passed the Initiative would eliminate state and
local affirmative action programs for women and minorities in
public employment, education, and contracting, except where
required by federal law; and
WHEREAS, if passed the Initiative would create a major change
in California constitutional law that would substantially lessen
protection against gender discrimination; and
WHEREAS, if passed the Initiative will interfere with the
City'S ability to set and continue its own policies,
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA
DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:

SECTION 1.
The City Council declares i ts opposition to
Proposition 209, the California civil Rights Initiative, and urges
all citizens to vote against the Initiative in the November, 1996
election.
SECTION 2. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of
this Resolution, and thenceforth and thereafter the same shall be
in full force and effect.
