R-4610 CA ~SIS:jst 3-18-75 Rev. 1 e RESOLUTION NO. 4610 (ees) (City Councl1 Series) A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA DECLARING ITS SUPPORT FOR THE ISSUANCE OF AND URGING THE POSTMASTER GENERAL TO ISSUE A MARY McCLEOD BETHUNE COMMEMORATIVE STAt1P EDITION. WHEREAS, Benjamin F. Bailer, Postmaster General of the Unlted States, is considering issuing a centennial postage stamp edition commemoratlng the birth of Mary McC1eod Bethune; and, WHEREAS, Mary McCleod Bethune made a slgnificant contribut~on to the cultural history of the United States and, among other things, established an institute for girls at Daytona Beach, Florida, established Bethune-Cookman College at Daytona Beach, Florida, and served as ltS president from lts lnceptlon until 1942, and then again from 1946 to 1947, was Director of the Division of Negro Affairs of the National Youth Adminlstration from 1936 through 1944, was an Assistant to the Secretary of War during World \~ar II, was special advisor to President Franklln D. Roosevelt on the problems of minorlty groups in the Unlted States, and was an observer for the United States Department of State at the Un~ted Nations Conference on International Organlzation in San Francisco, California, in 1945; and, WHEREAS, the work of Mary McCleod Bethune is deservlng of commemoration, NOW THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1. That it supports the issuance of a stamp edition commemorating Mary McCleod Bethune. SECTION 2. That, on behalf of the City of Santa Monica, Californla, ~t urges BenJamin F. Bailer, Postmaster -1- . e General of the United States of Amer1ca, to issue a stamp ed1tio commemorating Mary McCleod Bethune. SECTION 3. The City Clerk 15 instructed to forward copies of thlS resolution to Benjamln F. Ba2ler, Postmaster General of the United States of Amer1ca. SECTION 4. The city Clerk shall certify to the adoptlon of this resolution, and thenceforth and thereafter the same shall be in full force and effect.
