A RESOLUTION OF THE CI'l'Y COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF SANTA MONICA DESIGNATING A CERTAIN
AREA AN UNDERGROUND UTILITY DISTRICT,
ORDERING THE REMOVAL OF POLES, OVERHEAD
WIRES, AND ASSOCIATED OVERHEAD STRUCTURES
'l'HEREFROM, AND ORDERING THE UNDERGROUND
INSTAI.TATION OF WIRES AND FACILITIES FOR
SUPPLYING ELECTRIC, COMMUNICATION, AND
SIMILAR OR ASSOCIATED SERVICE.
WHEREAS, the City Council, on June 25, 1968, did
adopt Ordinance No. 773 (City Council Series), adding Chapter
9 to Article VII of the Santa Monica Municipal Code, which
chapter is titled as follows:
"CHAPTER 9 - REGULATIONS AND PROCEDURES HE OVERHEAD
AND UNDERGROUND UTILITY FACILITIES", and
WHEREAS, the City Council, on February 11, 1969 did
adopt an approved utility undergrounding program; and
WHEREAS, the City Council desires to designate
Broadway from Twentieth Street to TWenty-sixth Street an
Underground Utility District; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Santa Monica
hereby finds that such undergrounding is in the general public
interest for the following reasons:
1. Such undergrounding will eliminate an unusually
heavy concentration of overh~ad distribution
fa.cilities;
2. Said street is extensively used by the general
public and carries a heavy volume of vehicular
traffic; and
3. Said street passes through an a.rea which would
benefit from the aesthetic improvement resulting
from such undergrounding; and

WHEREAS, since there are no overhead services requir-
ing relocation underground on this line, the City Attorney has
ruled that the public hearing by Council required by Section
7901 of the Municipal Code need not be held; and
WHEREAS, the Southern California Edison Company and
the General Telephone Company desire to accomplish the under-
grounding of this line at an early date;
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA
MONICA DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. Broadway, from Twentieth Street to
TWenty-sixth street, and those portions of the intersecting
streets and courts as are required to accomplish the purpose
of this resolution, hereby is designated an Underground utility
District.
SECTION 2. 1he City Council hereby orders the removal
of all poles, overhead wires and associated structures from
_ithln the designated Underground Utility District and the
underground installation therein of all wires and facilities
required for supplying electric, communication, or similar or
associated service.
SECTION 3. The City Council hereby fixes twelve
months from the effective date of this resolution as the time
within which such removal and underground installation shall be
accomplished.
SECTION 4. The City Clerk shall certify to the adop-
tion of this resolution and thenceforth and thereafter the
same shall be in full force and effect.
