A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
eITY OF SANTA MONICA APPROVING AND
AUTHORIZING THE BUILDING OFFICER OF THE
CITY OF SANTA MONICA TO DESTROY CERTAIN
CITY BUILDING PLANS, DRA\..rINGS AND DOCUMENrS
UNDER HIS CHARGE, PURSUANT TO SECTION 34090
OF THE GOVERNMENT CODE OF CALIFORNIA.
WHEREAS, the Building Officer of the City of Santa
Monica desires to destroy certain City Building and Safety copies
of plans, drawings and documents, in storage, under his charge,
without making a copy thereof, which are over 2 years old, and
WHEREAS, the Building Officer of the City of Santa
Monica has determined that said City Building and Safety copies
of plans, drawings and documents,under his charge, are no longer
required for public or private purposes for the reasons stated
hereafter:
1. Said plans, drawings and documents are of
buildings or structures which have subse-
quently been demolished, replaced, enlarged,
altered or remodeled to an extent that said
stored plans and documents are substantially
inaccurate and of no value.
2. Said plans, drawings and documents are of
buildings or structures of conventional or
other construction specifically exempt from
the Building Records retention requirements
of the current preemptive state statute
(1971): Chapter 10 of Part 3, Division 13
of the Health and Safety Code commencing

with Sec. 19850, namely:
a) Single or multiple dwellings not more
than two stories and basement in height.
b) Garages and other structures appurtenant
to buildings described under (a).
c} Farm or ranch buildings.
d) Anyone story building where the span
between bearing walls does not exceed
25 feet; excluding steel frame or concrete
buildings, and
WHEREAS, the Building Officer of the City of Santa
Monica has determined that destruction of the above mentioned
materials is necessary to conserve storage space, and reduce staff
time, expense and confusion in handling and informing the public;
and,
WHEREAS, Section 34090 of the Government Code of the
State of California authorizes the head of a City department to
destroy any city records, and documents which are over 2 years old
under his charge, without making a copy thereof, after the same
are no longer required, upon the approval of the City CO\.1ncil by
resolution and the written consent of the City Attorney; and,
WHEREAS, the approval as to form by the City Attorney
of the City of Santa Monica hereby constitutes written consent
for the destruction of the hereinabove described City materials.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA
MONICA DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. That the Building Officer of the City
of Santa Monica be and is hereby authorized to destroy Building
and Safety copies of plans, drawings and documents under his
charge except those materials which qualify to be retained under
the current state statute~
