RESOLUTION NO. 9485 (CCS)
(CITY COUNCIL SERIES)
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA
SUPPORTING THE EARTH DAY 2000 CLEAN ENERGY AGENDA
WHEREAS, a sound natural environment is the foundation of a sustainable
society; and
WHEREAS, human activities around the globe are causing severe environmental
damage that threatens human health and the planet?s ability to sustain a diverse
community of life; and
WHEREAS, knowledge of sustainable practices which ensure a healthy
environment already exists and must be shared; and
WHEREAS, cities can do much to reverse environmental degradation and
promote the building of a healthy society by addressing issues such as energy use,
transportation, and pollution prevention; and
WHEREAS, cities which initiate energy efficiency and renewable energy
programs benefit economically,
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA
DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. The City recognizes April 22, 2000 as ?Earth Day? and commits
itself to undertaking programs and projects that enhance the local and global
environment.

SECTION 2. The City encourages its residents, businesses and institutions to
celebrate the Earth and commit to building a sustainable society by participating in
Earth Day 2000.
SECTION 3. The City commits to supporting the Earth Day Network?s Earth Day
2000 campaign by endorsing the Clean Energy Agenda and undertaking energy
efficiency and renewable energy programs that promote the use of clean and efficient
energy within its boundaries.
SECTION 4. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this Resolution, and
thenceforth and thereafter the same shall be in full force and effect.
