MILES MEMORIAL PLAYHOUSE
LINCOLN PARK, 1130 LINCOLN, SANTA MONICA, CA.
J. Euclid Miles, in his last Will and Testament, bequea
to the City of Santa Monica, $25,000 to erect a memorial to
A. Miles. The terms and conditions of this bequest are as f
"To the City of Santa Monica, County of Los Angeles, St
of California, or should the City of Santa Monica, County of
Angeles, State of California, at the time of my death, be a
of any other city, then to such city, I give, devise and beq
upon the strict compliance and fulfillment of the hereinafte
conditions and purposes, and not otherwise, the sum of Twent
Thousand ($25,000.00) Dollars, which sum my executor hereina
named shall pay to the said City of Santa Monica, or to such
city as the City of Santa Monica shall be a part, providing
city will:
1st: Accept this bequest for the purpose hereinafter n
by resolution duly passed and spread upon the minutes of the
city.
2nd: It will, at its own cost and expense, provide pro er
plans and specifications, and let contracts for the erection within
one of the City Parks, such structure to be located North of the
street now known as Pico Boulevard, Santa Monica, and west 0 i'ts
present city limits, of and for a structure adapted for and o be
used for a public Recreation Hall for the children and young men
and women of the city; such building to contain a tablet att ched
to the wall, at or near the main entrance to same, or an ins ription
chiselled into stone, embedded in the wall of said building, at or
near its main entrance, stating that said building was erect d as
a Memorial to Mary A. Miles, by J. Euclid Miles and Katharin Miles,
and dedicated to the young men and women of Santa Monica.
3rd: The City Council, or other governing body, shall, by
resolution, provide and guarantee the expenses of the proper upkeep
and maintenance of this memorial.
The sufficiency of the fulfillment of the conditions
to be judged solely by my Executor hereinafter named.
In the event of the non-acceptance by the Council of sa d City
of the condition of this beques~, within six months after pr per
notification, by my executor, then and in that event this be uest to
be null and void, and the amount so bequeathed shall go to m beloved
wife, Katharine 'Dugan Miles, if she be living, and if she be dead. to
become a part of the residue of my estate."
Attached is a copy of Resolution #59l,adopted March 13, 1925
and Resolution #877, adopted January 23, 1929, by the City C uncil.
With these Resolutions the City Council accepted the bequest and
agreed to pay for the upkeep of the building.

The contract to construct the building at a cost of $2l,20b
was given to Wilson Brothers, 822 Euclid Avenue, Santa Monic .
The architect who designed the building was John Byers, a So
California Architect who was noted for designing buildings i
Spanish Colonial Revival Style. The building permit was iss
May 13, 1929.
The building is a two story building with a basement.
footing is concrete and the upper walls are stone tile.
"A Guide to Architecture in Southern California" by Geb ardt
and Winter, lists the Miles Memorial Playhouse as one of the build-
ings in the Santa Monica area to visit. The building is the Spanish
Colonial Revival Style popular in the 1920s.
The building currently is used as an auditorium and has a pot-
tery shop in the basement.
The Miles Memorial Playhouse is an unrein forced masonry building
and in order for it to be seismically safe, it would be nece sary to
spend $63,000 to upgrade the building structurally. Attache to this
is a detailed estimate from the Engineering Department, of t e cost
for structural and cosmetic repairs. Also, an estimate of t e cost
to replace the building is included.
