designed to be safer for everyone, including more stop signs, street calming, and
speed limits that do not exceed 25 mph, including on Ocean Ave. Please support and

Dear Santa Monica Mayor, City Council and City Manager,
I'm an educator in the field of STEM and I teach children at schools all across our beautiful city. I solely rely on my bike to
get to work and to run errands. I'm grateful that our city has relatively good infrastructure which enable me to do that
but we can definitely use more and better infrastructure.
I support the City’s commitment to safer streets and more protected bike lanes. Please prioritize improving bike and
pedestrian infrastructure and Vision Zero. The City must continue the overwhelming community supported commitment

Re: 2/27/2024 Santa Monica City Council Agenda Item 3B
Dear Mayor Brock, Vice Mayor Negrete, City Councilmembers, and City Manager,
I am grateful that we will all be getting an update about the implementation and status of the City’s Bike Action
Plan and Vision Zero. I have greatly appreciated the renewed focus on making our City safer for all who
traverse Santa Monica streets over the past few years.
Although there is no formal action for the City Council to take tonight on the City Manager’s update on Santa
Monica’s Bike Action Plan and Vision Zero efforts, I urge the Council to reflect on the information provided and
collaboratively work to implement best practices locally to improve safety on our streets.
I believe that something we can all agree on in this City is that we all want to see the number of fatalities and
significant injuries from traffic violence to drop to zero. And I believe that this is an achievable goal - if we
prioritize safety on our streets rather than convenience and speed for those who need to (or choose to) use
motor vehicles.
We are a multi-modal city which means that we understand that different folks may need to use different
methods to get around and that we understand that making our streets safer for folks like pedestrians and
bicyclists makes our streets safer for all Santa Monicans.
Sincerely,
Natalya Zernitskaya

Working to make the
City of Santa Monica a
more sustainable,

RE: Agenda 3B, 2/27 Council Meeting
Dear Mayor and City Council Members:
Santa Monica Spoke and the Santa Monica Safe Streets Alliance are pleased to see that this evening’s
City Manager Report includes the Department of Transportation’s Mobility presentation on the genuine
progress made with the Bike Action Plan Amendment and Vision Zero efforts making our streets safer for
everyone. As our City shows its leadership in providing road users, including the most vulnerable, such
as people walking and biking, with street and infrastructure design that secure public safety, the
community can trust that our quality of lives and living improves.
Maintaining public safety in our streets strengthens our community, climate resiliency and our capacity
to help the children, youth, adults and elders know that they have the freedom to choose commuting
options that keep them active and healthy. As studies show, active commuting, like biking, leads to
enjoyment and productivity throughout the day including at school, work or play. Simply put, “Bicycling
for transportation, such as commuting to work, provides the benefits of incorporating exercise into
everyday life, reducing costs associated with driving a car or taking public transportation, and lessening
road congestion and air/noise pollution, as seen in urban areas.” (See https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/
nutritionsource/bicycling/)
Let us affirm how far we have come and prove determined to continue the advancements and
innovations towards Vision Zero and street designs to reduce barriers to healthy active transportation
and to safeguard public safety nested in positive community relationships.
Sincerely,
Cynthia Rose

Dear Santa Monica Mayor, City Council and City Manager:
I support the City’s commitment to safer streets and more protected bike lanes.
I am a 73 year old woman who uses cycling, walking and public transit for most of my mobility
trips. I frequently travel from my home in Culver City to medical appointments at UCLA in Santa
Monica. I depend on your cyclcing infrastructure to help keep me safe.
Additionally, as the founder of Women on Bikes Culver City, I regularly lead rides in and around
Sata Monica. These rides are frequented by women of all ages but with a hefty majority of
senior riders. Safety needs to be the top priority if we are to continue to frequent businesses
and cultural activities in Santa Monica.
Please prioritize improving bike and pedestrian infrastructure and Vision Zero. The City must
continue the overwhelming community supported commitment to prioritize and protect
vulnerable road users, like people walking and biking, with more protected bike lanes and

Dear Santa Monica Mayor, City Council and City Manager,
I am a Santa Monica resident ( for more than 40 years) and have ridden my bicycle for years on the streets of Santa
Monica.
Although I want safer streets I do not think the current road diet and cone, especially along Ocean Ave and the California
incline are the best way to handle traffic. It's very confusing as it is now.
And there are way more cars that use Ocean Ave than bikes Take down those stupid cones please.

Dear Santa Monica Mayor, City Council and City Manager,
As a resident of Santa Monica, I hope that you will support efforts to enhance street safety and
implement more protected bike lanes. Specifically addressing those among you who have previously
voiced concerns about such measures, I implore you to reconsider.
The global evidence overwhelmingly supports the long-term benefits of prioritizing safe streets and
protected bike lanes. As elected officials, it is incumbent upon you to familiarize yourselves with these
best practices. While change inevitably brings some inconvenience and necessitates trade-offs, the
data unequivocally demonstrates that embracing a more multi-modal transportation approach yields
vastly more positive outcomes than negative ones.
The unchecked dominance of cars in our urban landscape (especially outside of Downtown) is
detrimental to the cohesive fabric of our city. It is irresponsible to allow them to monopolize our public
spaces, thereby compromising conditions for other modes of transportation such as walking, biking,
and public transit. While I, like most in LA County, own a car and appreciate the convenience it offers
on occasion, I believe it should not wield such overwhelming influence over our daily lives. True social
and cultural vibrancy is experienced on foot, not behind the wheel. We yearn for safer and more
enjoyable options to engage with our city.
Therefore, I urge you to prioritize the enhancement of bike and pedestrian infrastructure, along with
the imperative goal of Vision Zero. The community has resoundingly supported these initiatives,
emphasizing the need to safeguard vulnerable road users and create streets that are safer for all. Let
us continue to prioritize and protect those who walk and bike by implementing more protected lanes
and designing streets with safety as the paramount consideration.
I implore you to support and prioritize the creation of safer streets for our community's well-being and
future prosperity.
Sincerely,
Mario Melgarejo

I run on the bike path 4-5 times per week. The number of motorized devices drive by careless people is out of
control. Somebody is going to get injurred - especially where the running path crosses the bike path and where
bikers ride/drive on walking paths. I think camera surveillance, at a minimum, is required. You spent all that money
giving us a beautiful state-of-the-art pedestrian and bikeway solution... and motorized vehicles are running people
and normal bikers off the road.
Please support and prioritize safer streets!
Thanks for your help,
Philip

Dear Mayor and City Council,
I want to thank you, along with our City Manager, and hard-working city staff members for your support in
making our streets safer, healthier, and more sustainable though the use of active transportation.
Your positive actions in creating more bike lanes, safer intersections, protected bike ways, and offering
accessible bike-share solutions will go a long way in making our streets safer, reducing traffic, and cleaning our
air.
The health and wellbeing of our community needs to be our number one priority.

My wife and I live in Sawtelle and would love to ride through Santa Monica to beach together but the current fractured
bike network is particularly rough for her as a newer cyclist. We just want to patronize the local businesses and enjoy
the beauty of the city safely. The new infrastructure that Santa Monica is installing is fantastic, but it’s simply not
enough! I implore you to build more protected bike lanes and traffic calming measures. Please support and

Council Members:
I live near 20th and Montana, and bike throughout Santa Monica. I’m glad to see progress towards making the
city’s streets safe for cyclists and pedestrians, but there’s much must more that needs to be done.
A key example for me is that it’s very dangerous to bike on Montana Ave. (a major bike route) between 21st
and 25th Streets because there isn’t enough space between the 3 islands in the “suicide lane” and parked cars
for both a bike and car. I have to ride down the middle of the lane to make it clear to drivers that they can’t
pass, which leaves me very vulnerable. This is also dangerous because drivers speed ahead of me and cut me
off so they can enter the lane adjacent to an island before I do.
There are painted bike lanes east of 26th and west of 20th. The islands in between need to be removed and the
bike lanes connected.
Please prioritize improving bike and pedestrian infrastructure and completing the Vision Zero plan.
Thank you.

Dear City Council and City Manager:
Thank you for your past support for fulfilling our city’s mobility plan. The amended Bike AcƟon Plan is a criƟcal element
for transforming our streets to be safer, more inclusive and beƩer able to help us meet our greenhouse gas reducƟon

Dear Santa Monica Mayor, City Council and City Manager,
When I moved to Santa Monica 12 years ago I sold my car and haven't driven since. I walk or take the bus everywhere I
need to go. Safe pedestrian infrastructure couldn't be more important to me every single day. I am regularly reminded
how unsafe our pedestrian infrastructure currently is and how often motor vehicle drivers threaten or intimidate
walkers (also every single day). I am likewise fascinated how once people are out of their vehicles and walking, they
adopt a more gentle pace and a calmer interaction with other beings and our environment.
I was also a regular user of the SM city bikeshare while that lasted, though I do not currently own a bicycle. I was
seriously injured while bicycling approximately 20 years ago when a driver in Ventura County struck me from behind. I
was hospitalized overnight and spent over a year healing and rehabilitating. I am a bit shell-shocked regarding riding
bicycles around motor vehicle traffic. However, I am fortunate, as I have had friends that have suffered far worse than I
from unsafe motor vehicle drivers and infrastructure.
I deeply appreciate and support the City’s commitment to safer streets and more protected bike lanes. Please
prioritize improving bike and pedestrian infrastructure and Vision Zero. The City must continue the overwhelming
community supported commitment to prioritize and protect vulnerable road users, like people walking and biking, with
more protected bike lanes and streets designed to be safer for everyone.
Please follow a "safe routes to school" mentality to establish "safe routes to anywhere" in our city.
Please support and prioritize safer streets!

Dear Santa Monica Mayor, City Council and City Manager,
I support Santa Monica's commitment to safer streets and first-class bicycle infrastructure. I live in Sunset Park and work
three days a week in downtown Los Angeles. I bought where I did so that I would be close enough to take the E line, and
I use it 95% of the time that I commute downtown. I either rent a scooter to get me to the station or ride my bike, taking
it on the train with me. I like the 11th St bike lane (I take it on my way to the station in the morning) and I love the 17th
St protected bike lane (I take it on my way home at night).
I urge City Council to continue the path that they're on, making non-car travel in this city as safe as possible.

Hello!
I'm Kyle, a Santa Monica resident since 2019 in Ocean Park / Dogtown. I saw that there's an upcoming meeting about
bike lanes and mobility projects coming up on the 27th. I won't be able to attend the meeting because I'm working late
and wanted to share a few thoughts.
Santa Monica's compactness and walkability initially drew me to the city. I absolutely love the recent protected bike lane
projects along Ocean Ave & 17th st. I go out of my way to bike 17th even if it extends my trip a bit because it feels a lot
safer than using shared lanes (I was hit by a car coming out of an alley in DTSM last summer—low speed, no major
damage, but it was very scary).
Some streets with unprotected bike lanes feel technically useable, but I don't feel remotely safe biking along with heavy
traffic on 4th St near Olympic & Pico or Main Street any time during the day. Main might be a great candidate to project
in the future.
I'm incredibly excited to learn more about biking and pedestrian projects like protected lanes on Broadway & Colorado.
Walkability and bikeability are very important to me—they're major reasons that I stay in Santa Monica. It feels like the
only place in LA county where you could conceivably adopt a car free lifestyle...something I hope to do in the coming
years.
Thank you for supporting implementing pedestrian and bike projects in Santa Monica!
