Subject:Re: CS0114806 - Blocked Disabled Parking Spots at Airport Park
EXTERNAL
Attn: City Clerk, written comment for Agenda Item 3A - City Council Regular and Special Joint Meeting 2/27/2024
5:30 PM
Hi Nicole,
My submission on Sunday is with respect to the Frieze event currently taking place at the airport interim space
and concerns accessibility and public right of way to Airport Park.
The two disabled spots, located north of the soccer field adjacent to Airport Park, are currently obstructed by
temporary fencing erected for the Frieze event. This fencing not only encroaches upon the designated parking
spaces but the fencing extends beyond the interim airport space/former tiedown field, infringing upon public
rights of way and public easement into Airport Park. I have attached a photo to this email for your reference.
Upon discovering this, Frieze event staff were approached and advised the party I was with to utilize the
disabled parking spots closer to the parking lot accessible via Airport Ave. Unfortunately, these alternative
spots were fully occupied, leaving no available parking options for individuals with disabilities. Also, attached a
photo of those spots being occupied.
As compared to the 2023 event it seems there is a significant departure from last year's event configuration
within the same interim airport space: https://mcusercontent.com/a5fd3b8e979cece4aaf07c91d/files/89d54b4f-

In addition to the blocked parking spots I have concerns for the mobility of people with disabilities between
Airport Park and the Airport including the Observation Deck. Despite requests for assistance on Sunday to
utilize the entrance/exits indicated on the map to traverse between Airport Park and the Airport (including the
Observation Deck), our appeals for an escort by the Frieze Event Staff were denied and we were told we must
walk (approximately 300 meters) around the fencing that was erected for the event.
I hope the City and event staff can address these concerns to ensure that the rights and needs of individuals
with disabilities are adequately protected and accommodated. This situation not only affects the accessibility of
public spaces but raises questions about the adherence to ADA accommodation and Santa Monica's
commitment to inclusivity.
Thank you for your attention to these concerns and looking forward to steps taken to resolve the two
accessibility concerns.
Regards, Mike

Hi Michael –
You submitted a 311 request on Sunday about two blocked parking spots near Airport Park, but the image
didn’t attach. Are you able to send it? Or describe what was blocking the spots?
Thanks in advance!
Nicole
