In the early 20th century, the aviation industry played a significant role in the growth and development of Santa Monica. Early aviators were drawn to the Santa Monica Airport after the Douglas Aircraft Company moved to the Santa Monica Airport in 1929. Among those legendary aviators were women flyers including Amelia Earhart, Pancho Barnes, Bobbi Trout, Blanche Noyes and Phoebe Omlie. These brave women are some of the most underrecognized aviators in history. The Santa Monica Airport is where the first Women’s Air Derby started in 1929, an event which had an indisputable impact on the future of women in aviation. The Compass Rose is emblematic of over 90 years of the history of women in aviation, with roots grounded in Santa Monica. The Landmark Commission’s role is to protect our cultural, social and political history and promote the use of landmarks and structures for the education and pleasure of the residents, workers and visitors of Santa Monica, in such a way as to show the full range of its heritage. It does not get more historic or historically important than preserving where Amelia Earhart’s greatest contribution to aviation was born – the formation of the Ninety Nines International Association of Women Pilots - an organization that continues to support and encourage women pilots throughout the world 90 years following the Air Derby. The Compass Rose, the trademark logo of the Ninety-Nines, was designed by Los Angeles Chapter member Wilma Fritschey in 1939 and continues to symbolize the history and traditions of the organization today. I am therefore honored to join the LA99s and groups and individuals who support the designation of the Compass Rose as a Santa Monica Landmark. /Vanessa Gibson Item 1 February 27, 2024 Item 1 February 27, 2024 1.A.a Packet Pg. 13 Attachment: Written Comments [Revision 2] (6276 : Written Comments) 1 David Yakobson From:Arthur Jeon <arthur@ombaseproductions.com> Sent:Tuesday, February 27, 2024 11:20 AM To:Gleam Davis; Lana Negrete; Oscar de la Torre; Christine Parra; Caroline Torosis; Jesse Zwick; Phil Brock Cc:David White; Douglas Sloan; City of Santa Monica; Clerk Mailbox; Jeanette Gant; Micah Akerson; Erika Aklufi; Danielle Noble; Ramon Batista; amgomez48@gmail.com; Roberto Lucio; Thomas McLaughlin; Jose Rodriguez; Annette Farmer; Maryanne LaGuardia; Albin Gielicz; Alisha Brady; swjohnsonla@gmail.com; Arati Desai Wagabaza; Lori Brown; John Smith; John Alle; Evan Meyer; emvandenburgh@gmail.com; Cc: Luke Cain; Peter Bosen; tina.grossman@gmail.com; Elaine Golden-Gealer; Eric Sedman; Michele Aronson; Aisling Winders; Julia Ladd; Peter TRINH; trinh@downtownsm.com; Anuj Gupta; ml.verville@verizon.net; dominic gomez; Jenna Grigsby; Attorney Mailbox; Shawn R. And I have no idea how much of this editorial is true, but regardless, jetting off to Vienna is a bad look at a time when the city is really still struggling. I am not exaggerating when I say I can walk out my door on 9th street right now and within 5 minutes find a dealer peddling Fentanyl in and around Reed Park (alleys, doorways, and the park itself). Business after business is failing in my neighborhood, which has lost all sense of walkable safety after dark. The county refuses to stop the needle exchange despite most in the city vehemently opposing it (17,000 signed a petition against it and you should be going to war with the county over this policy). But Gary Tsai and Barbara Ferrer don’t live the consequences, do they? I mean, even Gavin Newsom and Mayor Breed are pushing to treat opioid deaths as homicides, which they most certainly are, because it’s murder by another name. So when you are behind those two in terms of enforcement, you know you've lost the thread. The city will not recover until it’s safe and clean. Nor will its tourism industry. Still need proof? Stroll with me and I’ll show dealers in SUVs supplying their street soldiers on stolen bikes, who wheel around to pre-arranged doorways to supply the afflicted. Why is not all your attention being focused on safety and crime, and figuring out how to put undercover cops on our streets to go after these peddlers of death? This is the STILL the existential issue impeding our recovery and destroying the quality of life in our city, and is what most residents care about, as even Montana Ave is now dotted with addicts nodding off. Can you understand why jetting off to Vienna leaves a bad taste in people's mouths? And regarding Vienna, I know you are both progressives who ardently believe in the development being forced on the city by the state, but as a resident who lives where everything is actively being built, I can tell you the results are a blight, with unintended consequences that will unfold for decades. Regardless, Gavin Newsom won that battle for you, so what exactly are you going to learn on a boondoggle in Vienna that we are paying for? (Unless you have your eyes on our airport for some ghastly development—many in Vienna are high rises). Item 1 February 27, 2024 Item 1 February 27, 2024 1.A.a Packet Pg. 14 Attachment: Written Comments [Revision 2] (6276 : Written Comments) 2 All this is a bad look that stinks of Luxury Beliefs in action. I, and most residents, already live in cheek-to-jowl dense housing (me in a condo surrounded by apartments and condos), in a neighborhood now being inundated with huge and ugly 'Stack and Packs.' But like Sue Himmelrich and Michael Soloff, (and now I’ve heard Jesse Zwick), you BOTH live in single family homes. Good for you for living the American dream even as you push socialist policies. Glad you still believe in a house with a yard for kids to roam in. Meanwhile, all the housing being built in these ugly buildings is not meant for middle class families at all. Most are one- bedrooms (soon with no parking) that cater to wealthy and transient young people who will have no stake in our city. And this housing bonanza will do nothing for the mentally ill and addicted who can’t begin to handle the responsibility of an apartment (Housing First is the big lie). And making people dependent on rent control is a way to keep them mired in generational poverty. But you now that, because that’s why you bought houses. I know progressives (of which I’m one, just sensible and fair), are all atwitter about social housing in Vienna, as pushed by a recent NYTimes article. But the attached picture is their vision. And I believe it to be yours. But I don’t believe it to be the vision of Santa Monicans who want a livable city. So, let’s get real. You know what you want, and I know what you want, so going to Vienna to better learn how to foist your ‘do as I say, not as I do’ policies on the city, in the middle of budget cuts, and a crime and safety crisis, is truly a bad look in an election year. Cancel the trip, and put your heads down on the issue all Santa Monicans care about the most, which is being able to walk out the door and not be attacked by a deranged addict supplied by dealers who have free reign due to state policies run amok. You should be using your voices to lobby for changes at the county and state level that will benefit all residents of Santa Monica, except of course, the transient addicts and criminals whom you think should be given permanent residency. Seems pretty basic. Arthur Jeon Social Housing in Vienna (coming soon to our airport?) That consent judgment, issued in favor of the Center for Environmental Health in December of 2014 by the California Superior Court in Alameda, says that as soon as there’s an approved commercially available replacement for 100LL, FBOs have to stop selling 100LL. CEH’s lawyers have sent notice to all California FBOs to switch to G100UL as soon as it becomes commercially available to them. If they don’t, they could be found in contempt and face heavy fines. "GAMI head of engineering George Braly said Vitol Aviation, the producer/refiner now licensed to produce G100UL, is scheduled to produce large batches of the fuel later in the spring. Braly said it will “take a few months” to ramp up production and to supply all of the dozens of fuel sellers covered by the order, after which it will be able to maintain a steady supply to them." General Aviation Modifications Inc. head of engineering George Braly told AVweb the company has signed a licensing agreement with petroleum company Vitol Aviation and that company is now in the process of producing the first large-scale batches of G100UL® avgas. At this time, the expectation is that G100UL avgas will be available to the West Coast in the first half of this year. “The initial deployment will be in California,” said Braly.” To read the entire article click here. In the late 70’s I lived in the trailer park on 28th street. I want to talk about the Compost Bins. These are a great idea which I wholly support. Besides the obvious benefits to the environment, I believe they reduce sewer and plumbing expenses. There are now three bins behind our two buildings. One Trash, One Recycle and the liƩle green compost bin. There is only one area to place the bins which is in the middle between the two buildings. If all three bins are abreast, then we cannot navigate parking for two cars. So, the liƩle green bin has ended up behind the other two and apparently keeps being skipped for pickup. The result has been a fly infestaƟon as the material inside the bins begins to decay. Some residents want to move the bins to other parts of the alley in front of other buildings however, I am not sure those residents would appreciate that soluƟon and most likely the bin would magically be returned its original locaƟon. I recently pressure washed the bin myself, temporarily solving the bug issue. However, I don’t want to do this on a regular basis. Our complex cannot be the only ones enduring a fly infestaƟon from these bins. Since the compost bins are supplied by the city the fly infestaƟon caused by the bins would be a city issue and the city should take responsibility for washing these bins. I would also suggest that the city make available bug zappers for buildings to install to help reduce the ensuing bug populaƟon. Thank you for your Ɵme on this maƩer, Sincerely, Lionel Broderick 1317 Stanford Street #2 Santa Monica, CA 90404 Item 1 February 27, 2024 Item 1 February 27, 2024 1.A.a Packet Pg. 32 Attachment: Written Comments [Revision 2] (6276 : Written Comments)
