November 14, 2023 4.A.a Packet Pg. 14 Attachment: Written Comments (6058 : Proclamation: United Against Hate Week) Resolution in Support of United Against Hate Week (Nov. 12 - 18, 2023) Whereas the League of Women Voters of Santa Monica is committed to fostering a community rooted in respect, inclusivity, and zero tolerance for hate; Whereas United Against Hate Week held November 12 - 18, 2023, exemplifies our dedication to combating discrimination, intolerance, and bigotry in all its forms; Whereas we believe in the fundamental right of every individual to live in a community free from hate, fear, and prejudice; Whereas our support for United Against Hate Week aligns seamlessly with our core values as an organization, which include promoting civic engagement, advocating for voter rights, and actively participating in initiatives that contribute to the well-being of our community; Now, therefore, be it resolved, that the League of Women Voters of Santa Monica stands in wholehearted support of United Against Hate Week; Be it further resolved, that we encourage everyone to join us in this movement, to spread awareness, and to actively engage in conversations that challenge divisive ideologies; Be it further resolved, that together, we can build a more compassionate and tolerant society, where every voice is heard, and every person is respected; Be it further resolved, that in the spirit of United Against Week, we stand united against hate and work towards a future where understanding and empathy prevail. November 14, 2023 4.A.a Packet Pg. 15 Attachment: Written Comments (6058 : Proclamation: United Against Hate Week) 1 Xavier Mota From:Joanne Berlin <res1810j@verizon.net> Sent:Tuesday, November 14, 2023 7:47 AM To:councilmtgitems; Gleam Davis; Lana Negrete; Phil Brock; Oscar de la Torre; Christine Parra; Caroline Torosis; Jesse Zwick Subject:Special Agenda Item 4a - United Against Hate Week Resolution from CRJ EXTERNAL         To help protect your priv acy, Microsoft Office prevented automatic download of this picture from the Internet.      Resolution in Support of United Against Hate Week     Whereas, the Committee for Racial Justice (CRJ) believes in the inherent dignity and equality of all individuals, irrespective of their race, and recognizes the need to combat racial injustice in all its forms, with a particular focus on anti-Black racism, and the need to disrupt ongoing systemically racist policies;   Whereas, CRJ was established in response to a racially charged incident which involved a noose hanging in the wrestling room at Santa Monica High School in 2011, as well as an assault on a Black male student in the locker room – the discovery of which lead to CRJ’s formation and advocacy work that has, over the years, expanded to address in more depth the racism (personal and systemic) still existing in the arenas of education, criminal justice, and housing;   Whereas, United Against Hate Week held November 12 - 18, 2023, speaks about dedication to combating discrimination, intolerance, and bigotry in all its forms;  Whereas, CRJ has been actively engaged in advocating for the rights and fair treatment of students of color, addressing the achievement gap, and working to dismantle systemic racism in education;  Whereas, CRJ has dedicated its efforts to raising awareness about the systemic nature of racism leading to mass incarceration and racial profiling, in addition to monitoring initiatives such as the SM Public Safety Reform and Oversight Commission to address racial disparities in the criminal justice system;  Whereas, CRJ has consistently advocated for change through protests, press conferences, legal proceedings, and community engagement, fostering an anti-racist agenda in the pursuit of systemic change;  ITEM 4.A. November 14, 2023 4.A.a Packet Pg. 16 Attachment: Written Comments (6058 : Proclamation: United Against Hate Week) 2 Whereas, CRJ has been committed to continuous education and awareness through monthly workshops and a book group, both aimed at increasing understanding of racism and its eradication;   Whereas, the Committee for Racial Justice (CRJ) collaborated with the Black Advocates to formulate the Black Apology, successfully adopted by the City Council on November 15, 2022, formally apologizing to Santa Monica's Black residents and their descendants for the City's historical racist actions;   Whereas, CRJ remains steadfast in its commitment to collaborating with the Santa Monica Black Advocates and City Council to ensure the mitigation of the pain caused by many decades of racial injustice and discrimination in Santa Monica against Blacks and other people of color;   Therefore, be it finally resolved, that we, the Committee for Racial Justice (CRJ), express our support for United Against Hate Week, standing in solidarity with the City of Santa Monica in any efforts made to combat racial injustice and promote equity in our community.  Adopted this 12th day of November in the year 2023 by the CRJ steering committee.        ITEM 4.A.
