Subject: Request by Mayor Davis, Mayor Pro Tem Negrete and Councilmember Zwick
that the City Council direct the City Manager to explore and propose policy
and regulatory changes needed to elevate Santa Monica's attractiveness as a
major event venue. Positioning Santa Monica as a sought-after location to
attract both local and international events would facilitate the City’s ability to
proactively capitalize on several upcoming opportunities and support local
businesses, stimulate economic recovery, further promote tourism, and
provide new revenue sources to fund community programs and services for
Santa Monica residents.

Dear City Council,
I would like to officially support the city looking into options that increase the city’s ability to
increase business downtown and compete for large scale events. Keeping the SaMo Civic
Auditorium and converting Sears to a L. A, Artist Series would not only provide 2 concert
venues and over 100,000 sq ft of convention space.. It would also position us as a leader for
the 2026 World Cup and the 2028 Olympic events.
With 2 major event venues, we would be able to handle so many of the events from those two
major global events.. Plus compete for conventions, Art Basel LA, LA Fashion Week, comedy
shows, major art exhibits, and lots of concerts to bring in tourism, hotel stays, shoppers, and
diners to revive downtown..
Also, if that Sears was an LA Artist Series, that block would be full of security and cameras..
The entire feel of that block would change and it would help make that downtown problem
area so much safer.

Dear City Council,
Turning the Sears building into a Los Angeles Artist Series and saving the Civic Auditorium are essential to the redevelopment of Santa Monica as a global destination for arts, culture, tourism, dining and world class events.
A restored Civic Auditorium and a Los Angeles Artist Series, combined with the Santa Monica Pier represent 150,000+ sq ft of potential convention and event space. This would allow you to compete for larger events..
It would also give Santa Monica two indoor and 3 total potential concert stages right in the downtown area.
These facilities combined with the SAMO HS athletic facilities would make Santa Monica a very attractive place for filming. By taking a look at the map, you can see just how many facilities would be available to incoming productions if properly marketed.
An LA Artist Series would be able to hold production vehicles in the parking lot, by passing any need for invasive street permits for productions. We would also have on site, a substantial stock of camera and event equipment.
Once you include the possibilities of Belmar field and the bandshell with Santa Monica’s year round weather, it start to become easy to image opportunities for a music week, art week, fashion week, conventions, music festivals, outdoor film festivals and more that would bring tourism, shopping, diners and hotel room bookings..
