Candidate Recruitment
At the March 20, 2023 regular meeting, the Commission on Sustainability,
Environmental Justice, and the Environment discussed and took action on the
following agenda item:

a) Amanda Grossman (Sustainability Analyst) presented on the update
on a Commission vacancy. Garen Baghdasarian submitted his
resignation in February and Council approved this resignation at the
February 28th Council meeting. The Commission vacancy was posted,
and applications will be accepted until April 4th. Council will appoint a
new Commissioner on April 11th.
b) Historically, the Commission (formerly the Task Force) would
interview candidates, review applications, and make
recommendations to Council. In recent years, the Commission has
not been included in the recruitment process.
After discussion, the Commission on Sustainability, Environmental Justice,
and the Environment made the following motion:

I am writing to support the appointment of Mark Gold to the Santa Monica Commission on
Sustainability, Environmental Justice and the Environment. I currently sit on this Commission
and I was a Sustainability Task Force member for a number of years while Mark was its Chair. I
also know Mark professionally in my capacity as an attorney for the Natural Resources
Defense Council. In my view, there is no one with a deeper understanding of the sustainability
issues facing Santa Monica than Mark. He is very hard‐working, committed to improving Santa
Monica, and can get the job done. I strongly support his appointment.

Dear City Council Members,
As a Commissioner on the Commission on Sustainability, Environmental Justice and the
Environment I wanted to let it be known that I would love to see and highly endorse Mark A.
Gold for the vacant Commissioner position on our Commission. Mark has the background,
depth and breadth needed on the this Commission.
I would welcome the Council to vote in Mark Gold as out new Commission member, since we
need his expertise and background in this critical position and moving forward on the
sustainability agenda. Barring that, my second choice would be Gerda Newbold, who I believe
also has the strength of commitment and experience to add solid skills to the Commission.
