Dear Mayor and Councilmembers:
I like Carl Hansen very much. I consider him a friend, and surely there's a place for
him in public service, but affordable housing expertise is what is needed here.
I think it's vitally important to appoint Josh Hamilton to the Housing Commission. In light of
the mandate from the state in the form of our RHNA goals concerning affordable housing, we
have the opportunity to put an affordable housing expert on our commission. This would be
the prudent and sensible thing to do, and it would go a long way towards showing the State
that we are serious about affordable housing. He could provide expertise and analysis of our
goals and the nuanced financial tools available in our quest for more affordable housing.
It would just seem entirely odd if Carl is appointed over Josh.
Thank you

Good Evening Mayor and Councilmembers:
I write to implore you to appoint Josh Hamilton to the Housing Commission this evening. I speak to this an an
attorney and economic development professional with land use and affordable housing experience, evaluating this
decision at critical time for our City and state. As Santa Monicans, we aspire lead the charge for the production and
preservation of affordable housing, and to walk the talk.
Josh has over 15 years of progressively responsible experience in affordable housing finance. He knows how to
make deals pencil when it comes to affordable housing, but moreover, he is experienced in navigating the oftentimes
muddy policy waters at the state and federal level when it comes to delivering deed restricted affordable housing. It
would be irresponsible not to appoint him to this important position. It is not often that we have the opportunity to
appoint a bona fide expert to positions such as this, and I urge you to cast your personal relationships aside and do
what is best for our city. To me and many others, this vote is a litmus test for how we truly want to prioritize
affordable housing.
We have the opportunity to show how a local jurisdiction can catalyze the development of truly deed-restricted
affordable units so that we can proliferate the socio-economic diversity of the city we love to call home. Josh will be
a thought leader at this crucial time as we work to meet our new RHNA goals and adapt to changing land use
policies. He is creative and innovative.
I am asking you to please do what it best for our City tonight and appoint Josh Hamilton to the housing commission.
Thank you for your consideration.
Caroline
