About CIACLA CIACLA - Contemporary Irish Arts Center Los Angeles - promotes Contemporary
Irish Culture and supports local diverse communities through a multidisciplinary
programme, in collaboration with local and international cultural partnerships.
CIACLA is focused on developing a creative platform to support and challenge artists
as a means of promoting creative innovation and collaborative initiatives in Los
Angeles. CIACLA is a non-profit 501(c)(3) registered charity in California.
www.ciacla.com
Location CIACLA is currently based in Bergamot Station in Santa Monica Los Angeles for its
summer pilot programme of events. Bergamot Station is managed by Worthe Group,
and the location is owned by the city of Santa Monica.
Shannon Daut of Santa Monica Cultural Affairs {the city arts office} and Mike Myers
of Santa Monica Arts Commission {a board that looks after arts in the city} are the
primary Santa Monica / Bergamot points of contact. Both entities have a controlling
say in what tenants Worthe takes in for Bergamot and are very supportive of
CIACLA.
Bergamot is home to 25 other galleries and arts centers with which CIACLA has
become affiliated. Sharing news about our events, artists and happenings with our
colleagues has increased awareness amongst the local and international
communities, art buyers, gallerists and creatives. Bergamot holds a seasonal event
that brings in thousands of visitors to the center; CIACLA was part of the summer
event, which brought in about 500 visitors in one day.
CIACLA is looking at partnering with City Garage Theatre who has a black box
theatre on site who are interested in hosting future theatrical performances for us.
We have also begun a partnership with a local charity, Building Bridges, to share
resources and facilities.

Staffing CIACLA is managed by a team of volunteers and full time staff. For the center to be
open full time there would need to be at least two full time members of staff along
with a team of volunteers and event staff hired.
Please see www.ciacla.com/team for a full breakdown of the team
Fundraising CIACLA is investigating into apply to funding to Santa Monica Arts Commission /
City, LA County Arts Commission & California Arts Council.
Private Investors
We have made connections with several Irish/American celebrities and patrons of
the arts such as Georganne Aldrich Heller who have confirmed that they will donate/
invest once the center has long term funding.
Local Partners
European Languages & Movies in America, a Santa Monica-based nonprofit
organization dedicated to showcasing European movies, www.elma.org , have
shown high interest in supporting CIACLA with up to $5000 if we can confirm long
term programming support.
Membership CIACLA’s Membership Program - www.ciacla.com/support was launched in June
which so far has 43 Donating Members that has raised $8000. Many potential
members have said they will donate once long-term funding for the center is
secured.
Marketing As per the below report, CIACLA has been featured in major news outlets in both
USA and Ireland on several of our events. To close now would mean we may lose
momentum and interest in the space.
Community {re}Building The Irish population in Los Angeles Country has never been centralized; it is spread
out over the 4,100 square mile county. For the Irish in Southern California, there has
never been a physical Modern Irish Center. Community building has been relegated
to bars, church halls, and clubhouses. While Irish-American culture has seen the rise
of Irish Festivals and Feis’, there has never been a centralized brick and mortar
center for the community to celebrate their cultural heritage.
As mentioned in several of the testimonials we have included in bottom of this report,
CIACLA has acted as a sign of hope in rebuilding the fractured Irish community in
Los Angeles & Orange County where there has been never a physical Irish center..
We have supported and reconnected with Conradh Na Gaeilge, McNulty School of
Irish Dance, Comhaltas LA, Loyola Marymount University, Irelandweek and Celtic
Arts Center to name a few long standing organisations.
CIACLA most notably has become a home for promoting Irish Contemporary Culture
and connected Local Business, Creatives and Institutions with younger Irish diaspora
and visitors to LA. CIACLA can be a home for the new Irish Consulate’s ambitions
and community engagements. CIACLA can continue to engage with IRELANDWEEK
and host many of its cultural activities There are many well known irish working in
Los Angeles that play a vital role in building the community here, all of whom have
becoming supporters of involved in CIACLA.
Cultural Advisors CIACLA collaborates with a collection of high-profile creative professionals, including
actors, writers, artists and musicians to support our activities and help guide future
programming. Our Cultural Advisors provide knowledge of contemporary Irish
culture, raise awareness of the center, attend events, and assist in promoting a
modern representation of contemporary Irish arts.
These include: Paula Malcomson, Caroline Morahan, Eimear Noone, Olivia Tracey,
Victoria Smurfit, Georganne Aldrich Heller, Johnny O'Callaghan, and Rachel Rath.

Future Plans CIACLA Directors have submitted an application for annual funding to DFA and will
find out the result in early September.
CIACLA needs continued financial support from the Irish Government to allow it to
grow a funding base locally in Los Angeles. It could take many years to build this
funding base. CIACLA needs appropriate funding to hire full time staff and cover its
operational costs.

One of my favorite words in the Irish language is the word meitheal. Meitheal means a band of workers coming together
to achieve a task or overcome an obstacle that can only be accomplished by the coworking of the collective group. Never
has there been such a need for a space to bring together the Meitheal that is the Irish and Irish-American artistic and
diasporic community in the Los Angeles area. At a time where art is one of the few mediums which provides society with
a lens of meaning, an opportunity of healing and a sense of belonging – I feel such a center is critical to the continuing
and fostering of both contemporary Ireland’s relationship with modern America and for the broadening and deepening of
the cultural narrative and identity of the Irish worldwide.

The Celtic Arts Center, the organization of which I am Vice-President, would like to help CIACLA to stay in town. We
know that many of our members have enjoyed CIACLA offerings this summer, and maybe some have even joined as
individual members. We realize that the response you get this summer will be important to your future plans, and judging
by the response from our community so far, you have been successful.
I must also say that you have helped our community, by being a unifying influence. It's like the way Billy Preston helped
the Beatles, just by being there. And make no mistake, we are very, very glad you are here.
My question, in what specific ways can our organization (An Claidheamh Soluis, The Celtic Arts Center) support yours?
Whether that is through collaboration, physical support or "sweat equity," or financial. Mutual publicity is certainly another
way, and we have already been doing some of that. But what other way can we, as an entity, help ensure your continued
presence?

Though a great sprawling metropolis between the gorgeous Pacific Ocean and the San Gabriel mountains, Los Angeles
was never the most soulful of cities where the feeling of community was a visceral aspect of its draw. That changed this
summer due to the new center CIACLA– Contemporary Irish Arts Center Los Angeles-a potent wellspring of creativity,
culture and community that pulses with life. At the heart of Bergamot Station and the LA art scene this brilliant brainchild
of visionary Dubliner Matthew Nevin offers daily extraordinary events, mostly participatory and free to all, in every
possible art form. Almost impossible to recreate in LA the warm welcome and energy so integral to Ireland and the Irish, it
is now well-ensconced in Santa Monica. It is a home away from home for the great Irish community of artists, and all
supporters of the arts, living and working in Los Angeles. The City of Angeles now has a vibrant soul.

In Irish, the word for art is ealaín. The first part of that word, eala, also means a swan. A famous Irish story of young
swans, The Children of Lir, combines the pain of exile with the beauty of the song they sing of their story. Like The
Children of Lir, many Irish who are in exile here in LA long for home and a connection to family. We long for stories,
poetry, music, and the beauty of our culture. Time passes, customs change, but we long to be connected again. Unknown
to ourselves, we needed the Contemporary Irish Arts Center (CIACLA) to bring us together, to show us the best of us,
and we needed art to express our story. What has impressed me most about the achievement of CIACLA is the ability of
those who run it to connect with people and make them part of contemporary Ireland here in LA.
Most of us, like the swans of Lir, were lost and unable to connect with other Irish people outside of traditional music
sessions or language classes. CIACLA showed us new possibilities. The quality of art installations and the excellence of
the performances showed us what we can be if we give talented people the space they deserve. Having people from
Ireland and familiar accents bridged the loneliness of exile and made us feel at home. Incorporating local artists helped us
feel that we can belong here too, not at the sidelines but as a vital part of the amazing local artistic scene. CIACLA has
broadened our view of what we can do. It is a place that is welcoming and yet still surprising and new.
A special word of praise is due to the generosity of Matthew, Sinéad, and all the crew for making this venue available to
people when the local community of musicians was grieving. Their kindness showed no hesitation. That is the heart of
what connects us.
It took vision to see what CIACLA could achieve. It took heart and hard work to make it happen. People here longed for
stories, poetry, music, and the beauty of our culture. With CIACLA, they got it and more. We needed this to connect, to
explore, and to grow. We still do. Maith sibh, Ealaín ár Linne, LA (ELLA). Well done, CIACLA. You surpassed our
expectations and soared.

“Los Angeles is the point of greatest ethnic diversity in the world. The ethnic enclaves make up the patchwork quilt of Los
Angeles by preserving their identity and culture in our diverse city, living and breathing unity in diversity. I am so pleased
to have a community to belong to and add to the wonderful blend of flavors, culture and diversity in our vibrant and
complex city. Maybe there will be a Little Dublin in our future. Thank you CIACLA for this gift!”

Dear CIACLA,
I am writing in support of the efforts by the Contemporary Irish Arts Center, Los Angeles to continue to feature Irish Arts in
our magnificent city. I write from the perspective of a current professor of music (USC), former university Irish Studies
administrator (NYU; CUNY), and former community-based arts administrator (ArtSpace St. Paul and Connecticut). In my
25+ years working in both higher education and community arts, I have found only a handful of institutions that truly
embody the ethos of being a forward-thinking community-based locus for identity and the arts. Having worked closely
with the Irish Arts Center in New York City on numerous events, run multiple galleries and performance spaces, and
curated community events series for two university Irish Studies departments, I have gotten to know what works and has
impact, and what doesn’t.
From the start, CIACLA has worked splendidly. Matthew Nevin and company have presented a breathtaking pallet of
installations, performances, talks and displays that have engaged the community in ways unimaginable for a space that
has been in existence for less than three months. They have quickly built a community, and have tangibly pushed
boundaries and merged genre, medium and generation in a city known for its defined edges and practiced artifice. I have
not seen such a quick and complete and stunning success. Ever. My hope is that CIACLA continues, and I offer my
support in any way I can. Already my colleagues, friends and students at USC’s Thornton School of Music are discussing
pieces they could bring to Sinéad Finnerty- Pyne’s monthly sessions. The CIACLA buzz is real, and should be
encouraged.
Most sincerely,
Dr. Scott B. Spencer

To Whom It May Concern,
I arrived in Los Angeles in October 1975, and have been a part of the fabric of Irish entertainment here ever since. I am
essentially an Irish musician/singer but over the years , have been involved in theater, motion pictures, television, radio
and much more as a performer, writer and producer. In what still exists here as the Celtic Arts Center in Hollywood, for
many years I was the Musical Director and the Director of perhaps the only Gaelic Choir west of the Mississippi. In telling
you all of this, I am supporting CIACLA by attending many of it’s wonderful programs and believe that the continued
participation of CIACLA here in Los Angeles is a vital lifeline to our Irish culture. It has been a pleasure for me, as one of
the elder Irish performers here, to meet the new artists already living her and those who are coming out from Ireland to
present their work. Music, poetry, visual arts are drawing not only the Irish here but the general public as well. People are
bringing friends and associates to see what Ireland has to offer through CIACLA and the space at Bergamot Station is
perfect. The actual interior space and the huge parking area are perfect for presentations and so far, everyone I’ve
spoken to are delighted that CIACLA is here.
Under Matthew’s direction and his dedicated associates, the Center is proving to be the new central point for the Irish
here to meet, and there are so many who are still finding out about it.I look forward to seeing the Center become the Irish
gathering place for entertainment, socializing and presenting our culture to the “Melting Pot” of so many other cultures
here in Los Angeles.
Let’s keep it going….

To Councilmember Kevin McKeown
Dear Councilmember McKeown,
Last night, the Arts Commission voted unanimously to support the Contemporary Irish Arts Center
Los Angeles’ request for Council discretionary funding to help them continue to bring world class art
and community art events to Bergamot.
The Commission noted that the government of Ireland has generously supported Contemporary Irish
Arts Center Los Angeles (CIACLA) to date and that the Commission’s Bergamot Ad Hoc Committee
and the Worthe Group enthusiastically selected the organization for tenancy at a prominent
Bergamot unit. The group also noted that the events CIACLA has produced since its opening in June
have been high caliber, well attended, free to the public, and exceeded the expectations placed on
them upon their selection.
The Arts Commission hopes Council will consider CIACLA’s one -time request for resources and
hopes that members will continue to ente rtain support of various other efforts, as it has in the past, to
ensure that Bergamot Station is an exciting destination for the arts in Santa Monica.
Sincerely,
Mike Myers
Chair, Santa Monica Arts Commission
