13.E Request of Mayor Davis, Mayor Pro Tem O’Day and Councilmember
Winterer that the Council support a resolution by the California School
Boards Association calling on the state legislature to raise school funding
to the national average by 2020 and to the average funding of the top 10
states by 2025. California currently sits near the bottom nationally in nearly
every significant measure of school funding and school staffing. While we
are fortunate in Santa Monica to have a community that has stepped up to
support our district, that approach is not viable for many other cities. To
meet the needs of 6.2 million public school students and prepare them for
an increasingly competitive, complex, and technological world, the state
Legislature must secure Full and Fair Funding for public schools.

Dear Mayor Davis and Councilmembers;
Community for Excellent Public Schools (CEPS) wholeheartedly encourages you to support the California School Boards
Association resolution calling on the state legislature to increase school funding (Item 13E).
CEPS has been hard at work for the past 20 years advocating for adequate funding for public education. While our
efforts locally have been successful, the real solution is to ensure that California addresses the need to improve schools
statewide by providing the resources for school districts to do so.
CEPS appreciates the Santa Monica City Council and our community for its strong support of education and our schools.
Thank you for taking the time to consider this agenda item and our strong support for it.
