CITY CLERK’S OFFICE - MEMORANDUM
To: Mayor and City Council
From: Denise Anderson-Warren, City Clerk, Records & Elections Services
Department
Date: May 28, 2019
13.B Request of Mayor Davis and Councilmember Winterer that the City Council
allocate $1500 of discretionary funds to Samohi Grad Nite, a 501(c)3, to
close the shortfall between funding and expenses for June 2019. For 28
years Grad Nite has provided a safe, secure venue for graduating Santa
Monica High School seniors to celebrate their achievements.
To the Esteemed Members of Santa Monica City Council,
Santa Monica High School's "Grad Nite" is a parent organized, non-profit
annual event. The purpose of Grad Nite is to keep our graduating seniors
safe, on what is statistically one of the most dangerous nights of their
young lives. Grad Nite is an all-night party held on campus. Samohi's first,
on site Grad Nite was held in 1991 hosted by a group of parents who
believed there was a safer way for graduating seniors to celebrate than
going to a theme park with hundreds of other high schools or driving from
party to party.
Grad Nite has a valued relationship with the community of Santa Monica.
You, our City Council, gives generously with an annual donation. We really
count on your support each year to help us keep this tradition going!
This year, due to the construction on our campus and unforeseen
increases in vendor fees, we are running short of funds. Since we make
sure every graduate who wants to attend can, we then take money from
our event budget. And this year, the event budget is over more than$1500
in projected costs. We very much appreciate your consideration for this
one time grant to help us through this new era on our campus.
Thank you so very much,
Lori Whitesell
