INTERESTS AND EXPERIENCE
Current or prior service on city boards/commissions:
I was a Commissioner for the Building and Standards Commission for the city of Austin, Texas. I was
appointed by the Mayor of Austin to preside over cases concerning violations of property code and to
guide future building and structures policy and regulation.
I also completed the Austin CityWorks Academy program, which is Austin's equivalent of Santa Monica's
People's Academy program. This gave me a lot of experience with and understanding of city governance
and operations.
Community activities:
I currently organize and run the Santa Monica Pickup Soccer Meetup group. I wish to get more involved
in my community, which is why I'm applying.
Qualifications, experience, education, and technical or professional requirements:
BA Economics - UC Berkeley
JD Law - UT Austin
Worked at Texas RioGrande Legal Aid.
Volunteered at various organizations.
Served in leadership and development roles both in a volunteer and work capacity.
Areas of demonstrated expertise:
As mentioned in a previous answer, my experience a Commissioner for the Building and Standards
Commission for the city of Austin shows demonstrated expertise that will carry over to any board or
commission I serve on for my new home, the city of Santa Monica. My experience with Austin CityWorks
Academy also helped educated me on city governance, community outreach, education and policy, etc. I
also took part in Austin's Conversation Corps program, a program aimed at fostering discussion within
local communities and helping the city get feedback on a variety of issues which required upcoming
policy decisions. I also worked for the University of Texas and thus have experience in the education
sector.
Goals:
I love the city of Santa Monica- it's a wonderful place to live and to visit. My goal is to serve the board
fully and help Santa Monica move forward while keeping the essence that makes it an awesome and
unique destination and home. I plan to attend each board/commission meeting, be actively engaged,
and ask the right questions to get full knowledge of the issue being discussed and get to the core of the
issue, so that as a team the board/commission can make the best decisions for the city. I would also
work with any city departments and leaders as much as possible to help the board/commission succeed
in its mission.
Vision:
My vision is to help guide Santa Monica to its most vibrant future possible. Through cooperative
planning and leadership, we can make that happen. My goal is to be a significant and positive
contributor and leader in whichever board or commission I am serving in.
Personal Qualities:
I worked in very diverse work environments with a wide array of clientele. I have worked in education,
government, non-profits, large companies, and am currently at a technology startup. I have served low-
income and other disadvantaged people, and I have served large e-commerce companies. In all of my
work and volunteer experience, working cooperatively is a must. I lead by listening, by showing everyone
that they are valued, and then by making decisions that best serve the organization and its goals rather
than an individual's desires. Creativity and innovation have been a big part of my roles as a Business
Consultant and in tech operations now. For example, in one of those roles, I proposed 20 new business
ideas in my first month, which shocked my supervisor (in a good way). We discussed the ideas and then
moved forward with the ones that made the most sense for the organization. I plan to bring the same
creativity and innovation to my service for our city as well.

Subject: Airport Commissioner Recommendation
Dear Council Members,
I am writing this note to recommend Chris Waller to fill the present vacancy on the Airport Commission.
Looking over his application (attached for your convenience), he has ideal credentials and experience to
critically discuss airport affairs and, I believe, would be a great asset to our advisory team.
As you may know by now, Chris is being recommended by the board of the Friends of Sunset Park, which
would not be the case if he did not have the full confidence of Cathy Larson and Zina Josephs, who I know you
all have high for in these matters. He has also met with at least one Commissioner (not I) and has made a
favorable impression.
I think he would even-handedly represent the interests of the City and the residents, due especially to his
professional experience in airport environmental compliance.
Sincerely,
pd
Peter Donald

Subject:Regular City Council Meeting 11/14/2017 Agenda Item 13B
November 13, 2017
The Honorable Santa Monica City Council---
Dear Council,
I am writing in support of John Jerabek's application for appointment to the Airport Commission (Item 13B on
the agenda for tomorrow evening's Regular City Council meeting).
According to Mayor Winterer, "Santa Monica has a rich history of embracing diversity". As both a pilot and
board member of the Santa Monica Airport, I believe John will add diversity to the current Commission.
A pastor once told me the meaning of the word "university": from the Greek, it means "unity" in "diversity".
Our City is very divided right now. Perhaps we need a different approach. Perhaps the way we will get to unity
is if we embrace diversity, rather than only embracing points of view that match our own.
In conjunction with the above, John is a near 20 year resident, has family ties in the City going back to the
1940's, and is co-founder of The Flying Scholarship, a STEM-related award that provides flight training for
high school students ages 15 and up.
I believe John is more than qualified to serve on the Commission and I urge you to choose him to fill the
vacancy.
Sincerely,
David Whatley
