DESIRED?* Tighe, Patrick YES Architectural Review Board Applicant Abraham Cohen Application Date: 06/10/17 PROFILE acemail10@gmail.com 302 Bicknell Ave. Apt. 12 Santa Monica, CA 90405 Home: Home: Licensed architect: no INTERESTS AND EXPERIENCE Current or prior service on city boards/commissions: I was a Commissioner for the Building and Standards Commission for the city of Austin, Texas. I was appointed by the Mayor of Austin to preside over cases concerning violations of property code and to guide future building and structures policy and regulation. I also completed the Austin CityWorks Academy program, which is Austin's equivalent of Santa Monica's People's Academy program. This gave me a lot of experience with and understanding of city governance and operations. Community activities: I currently organize and run the Santa Monica Pickup Soccer Meetup group. I wish to get more involved in my community, which is why I'm applying. Qualifications, experience, education, and technical or professional requirements: BA Economics - UC Berkeley JD Law - UT Austin Worked at Texas RioGrande Legal Aid. Volunteered at various organizations. Served in leadership and development roles both in a volunteer and work capacity. Areas of demonstrated expertise: As mentioned in a previous answer, my experience a Commissioner for the Building and Standards Commission for the city of Austin shows demonstrated expertise that will carry over to any board or commission I serve on for my new home, the city of Santa Monica. My experience with Austin CityWorks Academy also helped educated me on city governance, community outreach, education and policy, etc. I also took part in Austin's Conversation Corps program, a program aimed at fostering discussion within local communities and helping the city get feedback on a variety of issues which required upcoming policy decisions. I also worked for the University of Texas and thus have experience in the education sector. Goals: I love the city of Santa Monica- it's a wonderful place to live and to visit. My goal is to serve the board fully and help Santa Monica move forward while keeping the essence that makes it an awesome and unique destination and home. I plan to attend each board/commission meeting, be actively engaged, and ask the right questions to get full knowledge of the issue being discussed and get to the core of the issue, so that as a team the board/commission can make the best decisions for the city. I would also work with any city departments and leaders as much as possible to help the board/commission succeed in its mission. Vision: My vision is to help guide Santa Monica to its most vibrant future possible. Through cooperative planning and leadership, we can make that happen. My goal is to be a significant and positive contributor and leader in whichever board or commission I am serving in. Personal Qualities: I worked in very diverse work environments with a wide array of clientele. I have worked in education, government, non-profits, large companies, and am currently at a technology startup. I have served low- income and other disadvantaged people, and I have served large e-commerce companies. In all of my work and volunteer experience, working cooperatively is a must. I lead by listening, by showing everyone that they are valued, and then by making decisions that best serve the organization and its goals rather than an individual's desires. Creativity and innovation have been a big part of my roles as a Business Consultant and in tech operations now. For example, in one of those roles, I proposed 20 new business ideas in my first month, which shocked my supervisor (in a good way). We discussed the ideas and then moved forward with the ones that made the most sense for the organization. I plan to bring the same creativity and innovation to my service for our city as well. Will you be able to commit the necessary time to perform your duties if appointed to the board? yes BUSINESS INFORMATION Occupation: Operations/Project Mgmt/Legal/Tech Business name: Business address: Business phone: Architectural Review Board Applicant Peter M Mitsakos Application Date: 03/22/17 PROFILE peter@westedgearchitects.com 307 Manchester Avenue Playa del Rey , CA 90293 Home: (310) 821-8286 Mobile: (310) 892-1219 Licensed architect: yes INTERESTS AND EXPERIENCE Current or prior service on city boards/commissions: I do not have any previous governmental board experience Community activities: I have been a volunteer member of the Board of Managers at the Westchester Family YMCA since 2007 and currently serve on the Finance Committee, the Executive Committee and the Sustainability Committee, which I chair Qualifications, experience, education, and technical or professional requirements: I have 36 years of experience, the last 16 as the owner of my own architectural practice. In that time I have been involved in a broad range of architectural projects, from infrastructure, urban and park design, master planning of communities and campuses, multiple unit housing projects, workplace environments and single family houses. This gives me a very broad and informed perspective regarding the range of issues to be considered and addressed. I have served as a guest critic at student reviews at USC School of Architecture, UCLA Extension Program, Woodbury University and Cal Poly Pomona School of Architecture. I currently serve on a volunteer panel to review project proposals for the City of LA Planning Department. Areas of demonstrated expertise: Recognized interest, knowledge, and experience in the field of building safety, fire prevention, fire protection, disability access regulations; Recognition of unique standards for the City of Santa Monica, including geography, current zoning, growth pattern, transportation challenges, and General and Specific Plans; Education; Strategic Planning ; My office completed documentation for an accessibility upgrade project on the Los Angeles Valley College Campus, which included addressing over 4,000 cited deficiencies. Our practice includes resolving these issues on a daily basis. I have completed several projects within the City of Santa Monica, including the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1440 Building on Second Street, and I currently am working with the Fairmont Hotel on several improvement projects. I have observed and been positively impressed with the City's planning and development since moving to California in 1982. I lived in Santa Monica for the first few years I resided in California. My practice has included completing Needs Assessments, Master Planning and Programming for Colleges. I have had a life long interest in how people acquire and convey information through various means as individuals and in social settings and have read extensively on the subject. Understandings gained from these endeavors has been reflected in our programming and design work for schools. The work of my architectural practice is built on an understanding of each of our clients' organizational, business and personal goals for the projects for which they commission us. Understanding the strategic implications, advantages and costs of planning initiatives or proposals is key to the successful development of our all projects. Goals: To bring an informed, balanced perspective to the discussions surrounding development projects in the City and to maintain the exceptional standard for building projects that the City has established over the years. Vision: Building projects have an aggregate effect in creating the city environment and that all buildings have a responsibility beyond the basic program to contribute to a larger set of considerations to make the environments in which we live uplifting, functional and sustainable. Personal Qualities: Leadership requires the ability and willingness to listen to a range of opinions, acquire an understanding of the relevant facts, discern priorities among the group and champion the best course. I have repeatedly been called on to do exactly that in my rolls as a business owner, project leader and committee chair. Working well in groups requires that you seek consensus and intelligent compromise without undermining the purpose of the work at hand. To do this one must respect the opinions of those with whom you might not agree, and maintain the perspective that most progress is incremental. I believe my work with the YMCA, and with the Planning Department at the City of LA are examples of reasoned, civil and thoughtful participation. Creativity often requires that we look at an issue in a new way, or to redefine the problem at hand so that new solutions can come into focus. This makes it possible to get past stumbling blocks that have held up more obvious proposals. Patience and an open mind are required for this. and an ability to draw from not so obviously related sources for new ideas. I think my general approach to our design work and my work in committees demonstrates this well. Our work in planning and building design is a constant effort to balance competing interests and clarify priorities among disparate groups, especially when we work on campuses. I have joked that the planning and the architecture are part of the fee, it is what you pay for. The family counselling, we throw in for free.
