INTERESTS AND EXPERIENCE
Current or prior service on city boards/commissions:
N/A
Community activities:
Volunteered in the classroom at Will Rogers Elementary weekly during the 2015-2016 school year.
Volunteer regularly at Broadway Elementary this year as well (Venice).
Qualifications, experience, education, and technical or professional requirements:
My experience lies primarily in project management: first in the film and music industries, and more
recently running a niche motorsports electronics company, producing electronics systems for racing
applications. The common thread is the task of taking a project from seed to fruition, pulling all required
resources together and managing them in order to bring the project to completion. I have a BA in Liberal
Arts, with concentrations in psychology and creative writing, and a graduate degree in communications.
The senior community would not be unlike other clients or creatives I've worked with, in that I know that
they need to be listened to, as their needs and desires are expressed, and then those need to form the
basis of the solutions crafted for them. I also have experience with my own elderly parents, and the
vision of the future I would like to experience for myself when I am also a senior to inform me.
Areas of demonstrated expertise:
1) From my own personal experience with family and from reading and listening to the news, I know
that with rising housing costs, the housing shortage, and the explosion of retirees coming from the baby
boom generation, our social services, healthcare and supportive housing will be tested to its limits. I am
guessing that at this moment it is not up to the gargantuan task ahead. 2) I believe that accessibility will
be tested greatly due to the housing shortage as people age or become disabled. Do they have homes
that will accommodate them? And if not, how can we as a community come together to provide to
them a place they can live that they can afford, or help them to retrofit their current living situation to
meet their needs? 3) I have long ago experience in Kansas City Missouri on political campaigns, and it is
evident that Santa Monica cares more about its population - all of its population - than most cities. And
it's already in high gear to address the issues facing it. 4) My experience with education is through
volunteering at my child's schools, and teaching at the Westside Family YWCA. 5) When I worked at
Playa Capital Company, building Playa Vista, I saw the necessity of public and private funding to create a
dynamic, mixed-use environment that serves multiple layers of the population.
Goals:
I would like to be part of the very necessary process to find the solutions to keeping our seniors safely
housed through their lifetimes, in a manner that they can remain connected and enriched by the city
they live in. I want to help bring together the parties who can get the job done. So many brilliant people
here - great resources to draw from.
Vision:
I see the board as the leader in creating a long-term solution for seniors that will be lauded by other
communities, and replicated. Santa Monica is in a unique position to pull off something great for the
senior community.
Personal Qualities:
I have demonstrated these qualities while helping to produce an album far from home, in London, with a
70 person chorus and 90 piece orchestra - managing all parties and navigating some tricky banking
obstacles to get things sorted. I have also done so when making a documentary film on location, with
scant resources and multiple players. Same at the race track. Sometimes you need to pull the resources
at hand and utilize the talents of those around you to reach your goal. Apologies for being rushed on
this!
Will you be able to commit the necessary time to perform your duties if appointed to the board?
yes
