Dear Council Member ‐ I have become aware of the attached item on the February 14 meeting agenda to draft
an ordinance that would help to protect Muslims and immigrants from the horrible, frightening, dishonest and
repressive actions that are coming at us from the current administration in Washington, D.C.
I am heartened to see that our city continues to move forward to take concrete and specific steps to resist th e
Trump ‐Bannon reign of terror and to provide safe haven for those in our community who are being
targeted, scapegoated and frankly, terrorized.
Thank you for your work.
Sincerely,
Victoria Best

where every person can flourish.

Dear Mayor Winterer and Councilmembers,
Happy Valentine's Day! I am writing in support of Item 13.E on the agenda for City Council meeting, February
14, 2017, passage of which will help the most vulnerable among us.
I am proud of Santa Monica for the position that has b een expressed by Chief Seabrooks, reiterating SMPD's
policy of noninvolvement in immigration enforcement ac tivities and for the supportive programs for immigrant
families at one or more of our city's parks. I have been present at gatherings of such individuals seeking
information on their status and options and have expe rienced the fear and help lessness in the room.
A resolution resulting from passage of 13.E will affirm our city's support for diversity and will put more
resources at the service of our most endangered residents and r eassure them of an equal status with all Santa
Monicans. It eliminates a tool th at can be used to discriminate ag ainst individuals based on religion and
national origin.
Such a resolution and support will affirm the unity of our community and be more evidence in support of our
city motto, which is more a goal than a reality, alas, for targets of racism and discrimination: Populus felix in urbe
felice. It is ironic that this action is requested on a day affirming love, and more meaningful, as a result.
Respectfully,
Dolores Sloan

Subject:Public Comment on 2/14/17 Agenda 13E
Hello to the Council,
I am writing to express my support for agenda item 13E, wh ich permits staff to prepare an ordinance prohibiting
employers, landlords, etc., from gathering and/or rel easing currently obtained information on the religious
affiliation of any person or parties with whom require their services.
Due to the promised agenda in which the current admi nistration has been elected upon we can rightly assume
this is initially meant for Muslims - but as we see the resurgence of wh ite supremacist groups, this can also
include anyone who doesn't fit th eir particular br and of religion.
We have come a long way in this world - let us not take any steps backward. This ordinance will protect Santa
Monica residents from such regressive action, and will co ntinue to do so for generations should current events
ever repeat themselves.
"First they came for the Sociali sts, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Uni onists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there wa s no one left to speak for me."
