SUBJECT: Recommendation to award bid for fire hydrants
Bid No. 1488.
INTRODUCTION
This report concerns award of bid to furnish and deliver seventy -five
(75) fire hydrants in the total amount of $21,899..07 including applic-
able tax. Funds for this purchase are available in account number
99- 955 - 200 - 000 -000, Water Department Revolving Inventory.
BACKGROUND
In response to published Notice Inviting Bids to supply these all -
bronze hydrants in accordance with City specifications, bids were
received and publicly opened and read December 6, 1979. Proposal
packages were mailed to twenty -five (25) potential suppliers and
notices were advertised in accordance with City charter and municipal
code provisions. Two (2) bids were received. James Jones Company
submitted a bid of $275.46 each for seventy -five (75) hydrants in
full accordance with specifications. The extended price is $20,659.50
plus tax of $1,239.57 for a total of $21,899.07.Terms are 2% - 30
days.
Clow Corporation submitted a bid of $220.00 each for epoxy -lined cast
iron hydrants comparable to four similar hydrants placed in service
on a trial basis two (2) year's ago. One of these test valves has been
disassembled and interior corrosion was noted at the threadediou'tlet.
It is estimated that the useful life of these iron hydrants will range
from 15 - 20 years while the all - bronze hydrants have been in service
for 40 - 50 years. It is also believed that the corrosion build -up in
the cast iron hydrants will appreciably diminish the flow capabilities.
