Wheelchair Ramp Construction - Award of Contract
Introduction
This report recommends that the City Council appropriate additional funds and
award a contract for the construction of wheelchair ramps and appurtenant work
at various locations in the downtown area and other areas to Damon Construction
Co., the lowest responsible bidder, in the amount of $35,030.
Background
Bids for the wheelchair ramp construction were opened in the City Council Cham-
bers after 3:00 p.m., Monday, January 7, 1980, and read publicly by the City
Clerk. Plans and specifications were issued to seven contractors. Three bids
were received as follows:

Community Development Block Grant Funds in the amount of $8,000 are currently
budgeted and available for this project. Bids were solicited for 43 wheelchair
ramps at an estimated cost of $19,000. In addition, certain street improvements --
to improve the curb radii -- are included in this project. The street improve-
ments may be financed with Gas Tax funds or with CDBG funds. Additional funds
may be transferred from the CDBG contingency funds to construct all 43 wheel -
chair ramps. Gas Tax funds may be appropriated in the estimated amount of
$21,000 to do the minor street improvements including replacement of hazardous
sidewalk and curb at the various intersections.
Wheelchair ramps proposed to be constructed are shown in the attached map.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the subject contract be awarded to Damon Construction
Co., the lowest bidder, subject to HUD approval, in the amount of their bid
of $35,030 and that CDBG funds in the amount of $11,000 be transferred from
contingency funds to Account No. 19- 200 - 262- 530 -920 to construct the 43 ramps
and that Gas Tax funds in the amount of $21,000 be appropriated to construct
the appurtenant street improvements.
