Bumper Car Area Award of Contract

This report recommends that the City Council award a contract to effect
the necessary pier repair work to John L. Meek Construction Co., Inc.,
the lowest bidder, in the amount of $276,488, and to appropriate funds in
the amount of $350,000.
Background
On December 17, 1979, the City Council instructed staff to proceed to effect
the necessary repairs on the pier in the area where the bumper car ride is
located (Item 6N). The motion was amended to include that the relocation of
the bumper car structure would be at the owner's expense and was not to be
considered a part of the contract for repairs.
The Notice Inviting Bids was published on January 10 and 11, 1980. Plans
and specifications were issued to sixteen contractors. Bids were opened in
the Council Chambers after 3:00 p.m., Friday, February 8, 1980, and read
publicly by the City Clerk. Four bids were received as follows:

Staff requests the Council to authorize the expenditure of up to $350,000
to effectuate the necessary repairs.
Funds for this project are available in the Pier Reserve Fund.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the City Council
(1) Award the Contract to the lowest bidder, John L. Meeks Construction
Company in the amount of $276,488; and
(2) Authorize the total expenditure of $350,000 from the Pier Reserve
Fund.

Agenda Item 6C -6: Presented for consideration at this time was a contract
£or award for repairs and replacement work on the bumper car area of the
Santa Monica Pier to John L. Meek Construction Company in the amount of
$276,844 plus contingency funds for a total amount not to exceed $350,000.
Councilmember Reed moved to award Contract No. 3454(CCS) to John L. Meek
Construction Company, Inc. in the amount of $276,488 and to approve
contingency funds for a total amount not to exceed $360,000. Second by
Mayor Pro Tempore Yannatta Goldway.
