SR-04-08-1980-6VTO: FROM: SUBJECT Santa Monica, California, March 26, 1980 6 Mayor and City Council City Staff Coppertone Supplying of Beach Trash Cans Introduction VIR 91 11"111 This report concerns the proposal presented by Coppertone to supply and maintain trash cans on the Santa Monica State Beach. Background Coppertone, manufacturer of sun tanning products, has presented to the staff a proposal through which they will provide and maintain trash cans of the type now used by the City on the Santa Monica Beach. The number of trash cans will be established by the City and will be as now supplied by the City. Each of these cans will have a decal around it with the following: Tan Don't Litter Donated by Coppertone The familiar logo of the little girl and the dog was dropped at the request of the Recreation and Parks Commission. The company has agreed to this provision. The Recreation and Parks Department must purchase 300 to 400 cans each year to adequately supply the beach needs. Last summer there were 1,000 cans on the beach. Each of these cans costs $13.50. Staff estimates that this offer would save the City $4;000 to $5,000 annually in replacement costs. Recommendation Staff recommends the City Council accept the offer of Coppertone and authorize the City Manager to enter into the attached agreement. Prepared by: Donald T.
