INTRODUCTION
This report concerns award of bid for Utility Tables in the total amount of
$10,785.50, including applicable sales tax. Funds for this purchase are in
account number 10- 400 -621- 000 -322, Civic Auditorium Account.
BACKGROUND
In response to published Notice Inviting Bids to furnish and deliver one - hundred
fifty (150) Utility Tables in accordance with City specifications, bids were
received and publicly opened and read June 5, 1980. Proposal forms were mailed
to thirty -one (31) suppliers and notices were advertised in accordance with City
Charter and Municipal Code provisions. Six (6) proposals were received, five (5)
of which were NO BID. The City specified 3/4" plywood tables. The Staff received
several telephone calls from table manufacturers offering an alternate table made
of Press Board. The Staff feels the Press Board tables will not perform adequately
due to the screw holding power. The tables will be heavly used by the Civic
Auditorium. From pass experience with the press board tables (previously used in
the auditorium) we have found the table legs, after usage, have a tendency to weaken
and break away from the table, pulling part of the table composition with it. The
tables are not repairable and become useless to the Department. With 3/4" Plywood
tables the legs, if weakened, can be reset in the plywood. The Staff feels the
low bid response is due to the 3/4" Plywood specification.
RECOBMIENDATION
It is recommended the award be made to Abbey Rents Corporation, in the total amount
of $10,785.50, including tax, as the sole bidder.
