Re: ARB Resignation

Dear Steve,
Santa Monica
1 have valued my time as a member of the Architectural Review Board for the last 3
CA 90404
years (since August 23, 2011). The opportunity to participate in the review of many
varied projects has been a pleasure, and the commitment of my fellow board members
is exemplary.

As an active business person in the City, I have been aware that my participation is
31 o aza 80 54 F
contingent upon several conditions, primarily avoidance of a conflict of interest under
Government Code section 1090 and.City Charter Section 1302.
Prior to becoming a member of the ARB, my firm provided services to the development
team for St. John's Health Center. I have recently have become a subcontractor for the
new owner of the project and am now participating in a team that is in the process of
developing the Master Plan for the Project's South Campus. As part of my work, we
pame(a HUR rOlJ
have been asked to review and comment on landscaping for the entire project site, with
stept,anle PSOMAS
a focus on integrating the entire site and connecting the project to the rest of the City.
As this involvement was beginning, I requested legal advice from the City Attorney's
Office and have been advised by Deputy City Attorney, Heidi von Tongeln, that I would
not be able to continue to serve on the ARB and as a subcontractor for the Master Plan.
I understand that I must tender my resignation from the ARB when our design work for
the Master Plan is submitted to the City Planning Staff. We have been notified that the
team has scheduled a meeting with Staff Thursday, September 4, 2014 to review
progress on the Master Plan, so the time has come for me to resign.
I want to thank you for your support and encouragement. I hope that I will have other
opportunities to serve the City of Santa Monica.
Sincerely,
- P ela B rto , F SLA

Dear Sarah,
It is with mixed emotions that I write this note, letting you know of my resignation,
from the Architectural Review Board for the City of Santa Monica.
The experience of being on the board, for over 6 years now, has been fulfilling
and very positive.
I have enjoyed participating in City life and in the important dialogue around
architecture being built in Santa Monica. It has been a privilege collaborating
with an erudite and well- intentioned team —all for the greater architectural and
livable good. For this, I'm deeply grateful and will miss all of my fellow board
members and the City Staff, as I move forward to pursue other avenues.
It's been a privilege to collaborate with such well- spoken, highly intelligent and
all- around friendly and hard working City Staff, led by the wonderful Steve
Traeger! Along with Steve, Laura Beck, Scott Albright, Grace Page are
professional and personable, making the commitment to serve as a Volunteer all
that much more appealing and worthwhile. And of course, Margaret Bell is the
highly organized den - mother and time - keeper who makes us all feel at home.
With warm regards,
John Ellis
And for the last time, ARB Vice -Chair
