SR-11-28-1978-6Hl f NOV 2 8 1978 Santa Monica, California November 16, 1978 i To: Mayor and City Council : < , "2' From: City Staff Subject: Report of Emergency Purchase - Elevator Repairs Introduction This report concerns emergency elevator repair service in the total amount of $4,674.88, performed by Otis Elevator Company. This purchase was charged to Job Order Account Number 11800 -000, Annual Maintenance of Parking Structures. This report is submitted in accordance with Section 2509, Santa Monica Municipal Code. Background On August 3, 1978, it was discovered that the machinery well of one of the elevators in Parking Structure Number 2 was flooded with water. This caused the elevator motor to stop functioning. The flooding was caused by a fractured shock absorber in the water supply system. This is the first known failure of this type in the parking structures. Since this elevator is in almost constant use by the public, Otis Elevator Company was called in immediately to perform repairs. Otis Elevator Company is on an annual contract with the City for elevator maintenance. The required repairs included removal and replacement of the main motor and switchgear components that had been submerged in water. To prevent a recurrence of this costly malfunction, the Department of General Services plans to install sump pumps in each elevator well. The motor switches for these pumps would be actuated by rising water. 6 Iq NOV 2 8 1978 To: Mayor and City Council -2- Recommendation November 16, 1978 It is recommended that the Council approve this emergency expenditure.
