SUBJECT: Recommendation to award bid for bus stop benches.
Bid No. 1466.
Introduction
This report concerns award of bid for three hundred (300) bus stop benches
in the total amount of $44,392.80, including applicable tax. This purchase
will be charged to account 36- 600 -651- 000 -264, Transportation Department
Miscellaneous Capital Outlay.
Background
The City's specification calls for benches with concrete bases and fibre-
glass or polyvinyl chloride (perma slat) seats and backs as a replacement
for the existing wood slat benches. It is anticipated that maintenance
costs will be reduced sharply through adoption of this new seat and back
material.
In response to published Notice Inviting Bids to furnish these benches,
bids were received and publicly opened and read June 12, 1979. Proposal
packages were mailed to twenty -one (21) prospective suppliers and notices
were published in accordance with City Charter and Municipal Code
provisions. Three (3) Bids were received:

Background continued
The bid of Dentin Manufacturing Company specified delivery of the entire
lot of assembled benches to the Transportation Department. The bid of
Los Angeles Steelcraft Products called for delivery of benches in a
knocked -down condition only to the Transportation Department. It is
considered that significant savings will be attained by awarding on the
basis of the lowest cost per bench and by using City forces to place
them at the bus stops.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the award be made to Dentin Manufacturing Company,
as the lowest and best bidder, in the total amount of $44,392.80,
including tax.
