Dear Mayor O'Connor and City Council Members:
RECEIVED
OFFICE OF THE
CITY CLERK
2014 JAN 14 PH 3:
JAN 14 2014
l3 -A
On behalf of the Commission on the Status of Women, I am requesting your support for
the nomination and appointment of Rachel Torres to fill one unscheduled vacancy of the
Commission.
On November 27, Council accepted the resignation of Melissa Dagodag from the
COSW and City Clerk's Office noticed the vacancy in the Santa Monica Daily Press.
Five new applications were received. In accordance with COSW general practice, all
fifteen applications were reviewed by the Commission and all applicants were invited to
speak at the January 8 meeting. A majority of the Commission voted to recommend
Rachel Torres to the City Council.
Rachel Torres is a Research Analyst with UNITE HERE Local 11 and a one -year
resident of Santa Monica. Her interests are especially aligned with the Commission's
Strategic Plan to foster career, political and volunteer advancement opportunities for
Santa Monica women especially young working women. Consistent with the COSW's
values of collaboration, Rachel will bring to the COSW her ability to build strong
alliances with community groups, organizations, and community members.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Sylvia Ghazarian, Vice -air
