Mr. Dituri moved to authorize the Council members, who wish to
do so, to visit Hamm, Germany (Santa Monica's Sister City) between August
30 and September 10 at which time members of the Association will be going

Mr. McCloskey moved to permit the Santa Monica Chamber of

unanimously.
At the suggestion of Mr. McCloskey, it was agreed to hold over
'.until July any negotiation with the Bay Amusement Corp, for the acquisition
of its land in the Pier area.

Life Saving Association) spoke and urged that the Lifeguards (now a
Idivision of the Recreation and Parks Department) be made a separate
',Department of Beaches or be transferred to the County Department of Beaches.
Letters from the Mayors of Redondo Beach and Torrance commenting,,
;favorably on the County lifeguard service were filed.
Mayor Hoover, in thanking them for their presentation, stated
'.that their request would be turned over to the new City Manager for study
and report.

regarding various items and suggested additional staff for the Council;
Eunice Seward, Betty Hiteshew and Gene Nelsestuen - additional Family
Service funds; Marion Butler, George Taylor, Michael Petretta, Betty Shirk,
Betty Cardona - funds for a new Animal Shelter; Sharon Levin - more funds
for Santa Monica Youth Orchestra; Ann Funk - funds for Santa Monica -
Westside Volunteer Bureau; Mark Baker - opposed any expenditure for
additional Council staff; J. Ray Gallagher - urged additional funds for
the Police Department, Paramedic program, opposed Chamber of Commerce funds;
Howard W. Rhodes - continue the aircraft patrol; Harvey Hanish and Louise
Van Cott - funds for Paramedica; Jeffrey Solomon - Lifeguard reorganization;
David Shulman - oppose Chamber of Commerce funds; Anne York (Santa Monica
League of Women Voters) - miscellaneous items including funds for open
space, Library, Family Service; John Jurenka - adopt budget as presented,
oppose funds for the Ocean Park Community Center.
As no one else wished to be heard, Reverend Judson moved to close
the hearing. The
motion was seconded by Mr. Trives and carried unanimously.
