A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA
MONICA OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA IN SUPPORT OF THE
CALIFORNIA RIGHT TO KNOW GENETICALLY ENGINEERED FOOD ACT
WHEREAS, numerous polls show that a majority of California consumers are in
favor of labeling of genetically engineered (GE) food; and
WHEREAS, genetically engineered foods are labeled in nearly 50 countries
including Russia, China and the entire European Union; and
WHEREAS, the same companies that are fighting mandatory GE labeling in
California are complying with labeling regulations in all of those countries where it is
required; and
WHEREAS, no long -term, independent, peer- reviewed scientific studies have
ever been conducted on the human health effects and efficacy of GE foods; and
WHEREAS, mandatory labeling of GE foods will give consumers the ability to
know what is in the food they eat; and
WHEREAS, Proposition 37, would require that most GE food sold be properly
labeled, and
WHEREAS, the City of Santa Monica supports sustainable food and consumers'
right to know how and where their food is produced.
NOW THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA DOES
RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. The City of Santa Monica supports Proposition 37, which will
benefit the public by providing citizens information on which foods are genetically
engineered through proper labeling.
SECTION 2. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of the resolution, and
thenceforth and thereafter the same shall be in full force and effect.
