A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA
DECLARING MARCH 17 AND 18, 2012 AS 'BUY LOCAL WEEKEND"
WHEREAS, the goal of the Buy Local Santa Monica Committee is to promote
understanding among Santa Monica residents of the importance and value of buying
goods and services from local businesses; and
WHEREAS, among the benefits of buying locally are enhanced convenience and
service, reduction in congestion and pollution from not having to drive private vehicles
long distances, support of jobs for employees working in local businesses, and retention
of sales tax within the community to support the schools and local services; and
WHEREAS, the Buy Local Committee consists of representatives from all sectors
of the community, including the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce, the Santa
Monica Malibu Education Foundation, Sustainable Works, the Santa Monica Small
Business Development Center, representatives from the business districts of Downtown
Santa Monica, Main Street, Montana Avenue and Pico Boulevard, as well as media
partners from City TV, Santa Monica Daily Press, Santa Monica Patch and the Santa
Monica Mirror, and

WHEREAS the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce and the Buy Local
Committee are partnering to sponsor a Buy Local Expo on March 17, 2012, with events
and activities to be held throughout the City and on the Third Street Promenade
throughout the weekend; and
WHEREAS, the goal of Buy Local Weekend is to highlight the importance of
businesses to the community, and raise awareness of the economic, environmental and
community benefits of "thinking locally first' and buying locally; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Santa Monica is issuing this declaration to
recognize the strong community pride our residents, businesses, employees, parents,
teachers and students have when buying locally.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA
DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. The City of Santa Monica declares March 17 and 18, 2012 as 'Buy
Local Weekend" in Santa Monica and thanks all residents and businesses for
participating and encourages their continued support.
