SUBJECT: Recommendation for Employment of an Architectural-Engineering Firrn
in Designing the Proposed Civic Auditorium.
At the regular meeting of the City Council held on
November 2Z, 1955, I was instructed to cancel the existing contract
for architectural services in connection with the construction of the
proposed Civic Auditorium and to make a further recommendatson with
respect to t'tae redesigning or designing of a new building and report
back to the City Council.
' Since the last meeting of the City Council, many ar-
chitectural firms have contacted my office concerning their employ-
ment by the City in the preparation of new architectural plans for the
auditorium project. Same of these firms are large and some small,
with varying degrees of experience and qualifications to undertake
dais project.
The firm of architects employed by the City in Tiny,
195, have agreed to redesign the auditorium, for which bids were.
called for on October 11, 1955, for an additional fee not to exceed
$70, 393, or an amount of $33, 7~i5 less than it would cost the City to
employ another architectural firm at a basic fee of 5°/a.
It is my considered opinion that the best interest of
the City will be served by the employment of an architectural farm from
among the largest and best on the Pacific Coast for this undertaking.
Therefore, again l recornrnend the firm of Welton Becket and Asso-
ciates, Architects-Engineers, located at 5b57 Wilshire Boulevard,
to design the proposed Civic Auditorium at a basic fee not to exceed
6%, even though it would cost the City an additional sum of $33; 785
for their services as compared to the proposal made by our former
architects,
Respectfully submitted,
RAl~?DALL M, DORTON,
City Manager.
